The BC Government has announced plans to make changes to the Land Act to uphold Indigenous Rights. Opponents are freaking out with misinformation and slander. Here’s the Land Act changes, explained: thetyee.ca/News/2024/02/1…
@Khelsilem If this gives First Nations a veto on infrastructure built on provincial lands, how is it decided which First Nations get to decide? If one supports a project but another opposes, what happens?
@Khelsilem My biggest concern is that all of these agreements would be signed negotiated and signed by cabinet, rather than the legislature. Any thoughts on that aspect?
@Khelsilem @nathancullen They’re freaking out for good reason.
@Khelsilem please explain how this doesn't give a veto power to indigenous bands.
@Khelsilem We are freaking out because they don't want to debate it in the house, that leads us to believe something nefarious is going on. It's that simple really.
@Khelsilem Actually no. At best, the article is speculation. The legislation will be introduced in April, and only then can we begin to understand its potential.
@Khelsilem Honestly this is the bare minimum. First Nations have stewarded these lands for millennia. Nobody knows them better, why shouldn’t the province be doing this? Why didn’t they do this sooner? Why aren’t they doing more ?
@Khelsilem Again, more showing their true colours. It's similar to when they say they are for First Nations land rights until you tell them about the logging partnerships a la 'Fairy Creek'...
