This team was exactly who we all thought they were pre-tournament, before the hype. If this was the NFL, they are at best the NFC South division winners, definitely no Super Bowl contenders. Group D was a favorable draw for the USA, designed to heavily boost their chances of advancing, and it delivered a relatively soft path into the Round of 32.

Like any sport, there are clear levels of team proficiency. In the NFL, for example, we quickly sort squads into tiers: Super Bowl contenders at the top, playoff hopefuls in the middle, and everyone else just trying to stay competitive. To me, the USA was at the NFC South champion level: solid enough to win a weak division, but nothing more. The gap between the USA and the eventual World Cup champion is multiple levels above.

So to recap what happened with the USMNT: • Balogun received a bogus red card • VAR protocol isn't followed (no slow-mo) • Trump calls Infantino to ask about the process • US Soccer lawyers preapre & submit an appeal FIFA's independent 18-person disciplinary committee then met, approved the appeal, and told Balogun he could play in Monday's match against Belgium. That's what everyone is complaining about? All rules were followed, and that same process is open to every other country. The only difference is everyone knows the red card was a mistake to begin with.

@piersmorgan @stoolpresidente US don’t do anything to Belgium. This is the result of the game prior where incorrect VAR review and slow Mo was showed to a referee to then issue a unjust red card by their own rules.

@piersmorgan In America, we have the concept of fruit of the poisonous tree. If the police had evidence that I committed a crime but obtained the information unjustly, it is thrown out. That's what happened here: how they came to the conclusion of a red was unjust. It should be thrown out.
