As skilled generalist clinicians working across adults and paeds we sure cover a lot of content in supervision. But my most often repeated mantra is that we dont need to know everything (and who can?) We just need to have systems so that we can find the answers!
One of the very best parts of my job is being able to provide clinical supervision to the #SLP team working out of Broken Hill. Ive been supporting the clinicians for 2 years virtually but to get the opportunity to go in person is awesome!
On my way to Broken Hill this morning to catch up with the #Speechies
And what really reasonated with me was the idea we should consider the mental health support needs of the readers of our reports and maybe even provide links to support options like @LifelineAust Might ask the parents/teachers my reports go to and get their feedback!

@speechieLO My practice & i think current advice is to start as soon as practical for the family & child. For some that will be to wait as long as there isnt any negative contraindications, but for others that is start therapy as soon as the family make contact.
@svm_sarah @Piiiiiiickles It was definitely advice given by NSW health last year for staff across the state after some reported attacks on Nurses and Healthcare workers around Sydney. Its not just isolated to Melbourne.

I can appreciate that its very different in different locations, it certainly was when I was a student on metro placements!

For me, im working in schools and preschools locally, so if parents find it tricky to get to me I can get to their kids where they are. I am able to be flexible in how I work but my trade off is a longer waitlist, its not perfect

I have tried to find every alternative I can for clients ever since so no one misses out again! (Im public health & free!)
I had the privilege of spending the last 2 days working in a ADF Vax clinic. So many teams from Health, Defence, Police, SES & council working together for the people of the Central West. PLUS... lunch from the CWA! Yum! Despite long lines & delays people were polite & thankful!
@SezClom Villainous is a really fun game, as is Outer Rim (Star Wars themed). The Catan 2 player card game is also great. My 2 person household is alwauys looking for fun 2-person games!
@speechieLO @JaneCaro And the kids themselves just see them as books. I use 'decodable' with parents and teachers to help distinguish these from the leveled readers that dont follow a phonics pattern and so arent able to be decoded. But for the kids they are books. Books they can read and enjoy.
@speechieLO @JaneCaro Im my experience, decodables help kids see the rules with written letters & sounds, learn they CAN do it, & start them exploring the books they want to read once they know they can - especially kids who are falling behind. They can't start with complex books but they get there!

@dr_deglutition Wow! Thats amazing. Swallowing is fascinating! I wonder what the person can feel. I dont have the ability to do any instrumental Ax in my practice, so im always guided by the persons sensations and concerns with what they feel, and then do what makes that better.

@janemckslp Im currently mid-way through Sounds Write which is fantastic. And last month I did an online training webinar on Food Chaining for fussy eaters. That really informed my clinical practice for the feeding clinic im part of. Havent done Talking Mats though.
