In my last poll I asked the #writingCommunity if they use people from their real life as inspiration for their #writing. The majority said they do that in all their works. I don't use people I know in my works. The people I know just aren't that interesting. Lol #writers

In my last poll I asked the #WritingCommunity if they thought 80,000 to 100,000 words was a good amount for your debut novel. The majority said yes. I agree. Most of what I have #written is either shorter than that or obscenely longer. That is where editing comes in.

@K_J_Holo As in, draft 1,2,3?
@K_J_Holo There's less need to take a break if you have written the first draft without looking back (which you should do if you can). The more familiar you are with the text, the longer your break should be.
@K_J_Holo I don't usually do "drafts" in that way. Each time I sit down at my desk, I revise & edit the past 1-2 scenes before starting the new scene for the day. By the time I finish the manuscript, only minimal edits need to be made before sending off to my editor.
@K_J_Holo I do take a week or two, but 6 months seems way too long 😯😯
@K_J_Holo Yes, I do take a break between drafts: 2 to 3 weeks - a bit more if what I'm doing next is just revising the final draft. Also, reading books (by other people) during those intervals helps me forget my own words.
@K_J_Holo I take breaks anywhere from 2 weeks - 2 months depending on the draft.
@K_J_Holo I just did this with my current WIP. I finished the first draft and set it aside for one month. Marked it on the calendar when I could reopen it. During that month, I queried my finished project and began prewriting for a new book idea.
My third book is going to be around 100,000 words . It's intimidating once I have to go through the editing. But I'm ready. The only thing that really really scared me was putting all that work in for the story to be trash
In my last poll I asked the #WritingCommunity if they thought 80,000 to 100,000 words was a good amount for your debut novel. The majority said yes. I agree. Most of what I have #written is either shorter than that or obscenely longer. That is where editing comes in.
@K_J_Holo Different genres have different requirements, though. So it would matter, I think. One publisher asks for 70k min, an indie publisher might accept less if the novel works. I think you'd only get an acceptance for a first novel with 100k with SFF.

Length is more likely to be based in genre and reader expectations, plot requirements, and imprint limitations depending on who you want to be published with. I don't think there are hard and fast rules that all novelists need to follow.

@K_J_Holo Who are they? And no. If your first novel is for YA, 50 to 70k is fine. If it is a fantasy, 120-140k is fine. A story should be as long as it needs to be to tell the story. Average, 80-100k is simply most common.
