A Geneva woman died and her adult son was left critically injured after a drunk driver who was allegedly using his cell phone drove into oncoming traffic and struck their vehicle head-on on Randall Road in Geneva on the Fourth of July. The Geneva Police Department and Geneva Fire Department, along with the St. Charles Police Department and St. Charles Fire Department, responded around 9:13 p.m. Saturday to the 1000 block of South Randall Road in Geneva for a vehicle crash with injuries. Police said Christian Mares, 40, of Aurora, was driving a blue 2013 Chevrolet Camaro northbound on Randall Road. His car veered over the double yellow line into southbound traffic, striking a red 2019 Nissan Versa, driven by Mary Wilbur, 71, of Geneva, police and the coroner said. Wilbur was pronounced dead at the scene and the Kane County Coroner's Office responded. Wilbur's son, a 26-year-old who lives in Essexville, Michigan, was a passenger in the Nissan. He was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Her son was then airlifted to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago with life-threatening injuries. He was listed in critical condition, police said. Mares was treated and released for injuries at Delnor Hospital. He has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence – crash causing death, reckless homicide, aggravated use of a communication device causing death, aggravated driving under the influence – crash causing great bodily harm, aggravated driving under the influence – no insurance, driving under the influence of alcohol, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle causing bodily harm, pperation of a motor vehicle while using an electronic communication device, driving on the wrong side of the road and driving too fast for conditions/failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Mares was transported to Kane County Jail on Sunday to await a court hearing. Geneva Police, the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Kane County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the crash. Kane County Coroner Dr. Monica Silva and her staff said they extend their "sincerest condolences" to the family and friends of Wilbur during "this very difficult time." A portion of South Randall Road from Kaneville/Keslinger roads to Fargo Boulevard was closed for hours while law enforcement was on the scene. A 27-year-old woman was found dead after she was hit by a vehicle, which fled the scene and left her to die, as she rode her bicycle on Route 20 in Hampshire early Monday morning. The Hampshire Police Department responded around 12:40 a.m. Monday to the area of U.S. Route 20 between Big Timber Road and Gast Road for a report of a crash involving a bicyclist. The initial 911 caller reported observing vehicle debris in the roadway and an individual lying in the road, police officials said. The caller reported that another passing motorist had stopped to render aid before continuing from the scene. Officers and emergency personnel located a 27-year-old female from Pingree Grove, who had been riding a bicycle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police officials said. A preliminary investigation indicates the victim was struck by an unknown vehicle while riding her bicycle. The driver involved has not been identified. Due to the complexity of the investigation, the Hampshire Police Department requested assistance from the Kane County Sheriff's Office, Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force. Those agencies are assisting with scene processing, crash reconstruction and investigative efforts. Investigators are asking anyone who traveled on U.S. Route 20 between Big Timber Road and Gast Road between approximately 12:30 a.m. and 12:50 a.m. on July 6, 2026, to review any available dash camera footage and contact the Hampshire Police Department if they observed anything that may assist investigators. Authorities have released the identity of a mother of three whose body was found in the Fox River near St. Charles on Wednesday. Kane County Coroner Dr. Monica Silva announced that the female body recovered from the Fox River near Red Gate Bridge on Wednesday is Amanda Flick, 41, of St. Charles, Illinois. With the assistance of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, as well as the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Coroner Deputies were able to transport Flick to the Coroner’s Office. An autopsy was conducted on Thursday revealing the preliminary cause of death as drowning, with toxicology pending, Silva said. Toxicology samples were collected at the time of autopsy and have been sent for extensive testing at a national forensic laboratory. Silva said she extends deepest condolences to the family and friends of Flick during "this incredibly difficult time." The investigation into the death remains ongoing. BREAKING: The Kane County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that a missing teen girl from Elgin was found dead in the Fox River on Sunday. 16-year-old Destiny Neal from Elgin, was positively identified as the female victim that the Elgin Fire Department recovered from the Fox River on Sunday, according to the coroner’s office. Destiny had been reported missing on Friday and was last seen walking in the 1200 block of Abbot Drive. Police were actively searching for over the prior days and seeking the public’s help in her disappearance. An autopsy was performed on Monday. Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a national forensic laboratory for extensive analysis. The preliminary cause of death is pending toxicology results. The manner of death remains under investigation by the Kane County Coroner and the Elgin Police Department.
