I learned the @boringcompany has a term called "Z-PIT", which is part of their long-term vision for where the tunneling process needs to go. This stands for "Zero People in Tunnel" and is part of a widespread effort the company has to use first-principles to completely overhaul the process of how tunnels are built. By eliminating people in the process, they can not only save costs & avoid work injuries, but also eliminate the heavy, energy intensive life-support infrastructure that is required for sustaining the workers. This would simplify the process, save costs & avoid potential injuries, speed up the tunneling process & in the much longer term, help with future @spaceX off-world tunneling operations! During my recent tour of the Boring Company's main facilities in Bastrop, Texas, I learned all of this is just a part of the overall grand vision of the Boring Company ... and they are just getting started! Pretty cool I think and I hope they are successful in achieving these objectives!
@JoeTegtmeyer @boringcompany Off world tunneling is part of the mission? I have thought that for a long time but was concerned about the energy consumption of a TBM.
@JoeTegtmeyer Thanks for visiting! Continuous Mining and ZPIT are the 2 critical technologies TBC is working on in order to solve traffic and enable hyperloop.
@JoeTegtmeyer @boringcompany Z-PIT off world could provide tunnels that are safe from radiation and aid in safe habitation and travel on Mars 🇲🇭.
@JoeTegtmeyer @boringcompany Are they working on a better way to manage the spoil? This complicated gantry and conveyer system seems ripe for improvement.
@JoeTegtmeyer @boringcompany Every time I see a new tech from a Musk company, I think of how useful it can be on Mars. Tunnels, electric cars, laser based satellite communications, Optimus, etc are all critical for a self sustainable civilization.
@JoeTegtmeyer @boringcompany Ok Optimus got first customer lined up. Even it’s just tele-operated it’s still a huge win and key enabler.
@JoeTegtmeyer @boringcompany The Boring Company may seem to be the slowest of Elon Musk's companies, but I think it is moving forward constinuously.
@JoeTegtmeyer @rightpointNS @boringcompany Fascinating and brilliant, honestly
