The point of this kind of marketing is that nobody is supposed to notice it. But lately, the machinery has started to show. In April, Justin Bieber headlined two consecutive weekends at Coachella. Coachella is the biggest stage in pop music save only for the Super Bowl, the kind of event that in theory generates its own attention. Amazon wants to destroy nearly 5 acres of Indiana wetland to add 14 new data centers, complete with 414 new diesel generators, to its New Carlisle data center complex. Indiana’s Project Rainier launched in 2025 and, with Amazon’s new proposal, would have more than 900 diesel generators producing over 2,400 megawatts of power—enough to power 720,000 homes a day. Diesel generators produce twice the amount of CO2 as a power grid. Black carbon and nitrogen oxides produced from diesel greenhouse gases are linked to spikes in heart and lung diseases and cancers. Indiana ranked 9th in total greenhouse gas emissions nationwide, and last year, Gov. Mike Braun (R-IN) pulled the plug on the state’s plan to reduce emissions. Public comments will be held through June 12.

To be clear: they’re not protesting against the sexual torture of Palestinians by Israeli authorities. They’re protesting against the NYT for reporting it.

Hawai’i just passed a bill that undermine Citizens United. The bill establishes corporations as “artificial persons” without the right to spend money on elections. The bill could limit the influence of super PACs and be a model to challenge the influence of money in politics.

Data centers are the leading cause of a 76% increase in the cost of electricity for America's largest power grid over just the first 3 months of this year, according to Bloomberg. The 13-state grid managed by PJM serves 67 million people, and costs have spiked this year. This time last year the cost of electricity on this grid was $77.78 per megawatt-hour. Now that cost has almost doubled to $136.53 per megawatt-hour. Bloomberg attributes that skyrocketing cost to the "booming demand from artificial intelligence data centers, which require vast amounts of energy and are putting a significant burden on America’s aging power grids."
