99% of people mad about the ban of hip drop tackles have no idea what a hip drop tackle is. This was one of the best explainers I found of what is and is not a hip drop tackle via the National Rugby League: youtube.com/watch?v=5KJ9mC…
The absolute more oddball comment I've seen repeatedly is "oh this won't eliminate that kind of tackle, JUST LIKE HORSE COLLARS" Yeah no shit, but you're in la la land if you think horse collars are as prevalent as they were before
@JamesDKoh I don't know how you make any of this stuff safe. The athletes are so ridiculously bigger, faster, stronger. The speed and power of the game is absurd. I respect what the league is trying to do. But I also feel like defenders are put in a no-win situation constantly.
@JamesDKoh @JoeGoodberry Then why does it seem all the players are mad about it?
@JamesDKoh I think that it's less about banning the HDT and more imagining the complete f ups that are undoubtedly on the way as refs try to navigate yet another amorphous rule at real speed.
@JamesDKoh @billbarnwell It would be wise if the NFL made the hip drop tackle reviewable/challengeable so that mistakes can be avoided/rectified.
@JamesDKoh I can’t believe how many people genuinely think the NFL means you can’t tackle at the hip lol half the battle is semantics
