Last year, we built a page on influenza and we are keeping it continuously up-to-date. We did it for two reasons: 1) The flu is a bad disease, killing about 700,000 people in an average year. 2) We were looking at what was happening to h5n1 and thought it might be helpful if we…

Reminder that kids under five are positive for one respiratory virus or another for about half the year. As most parents can attest, it gets way better as their immune system matures. Vaccines are great for immunity without infection risks — even if low, why not even lower?

This super fun short story by @RichardMCNgo at @AsimovPress hits a very particular sweet spot: vividly realized and scientifically plausible and so meaty idea-wise it's actually generative. Brilliant. 1/2
I would have hoped that in 2024 a central topic of the public conversation would be pandemic preparedness. I would have expected that we would all be keen to make the investments that make it less likely to suffer through another pandemic, with more deaths and lockdowns.
One big lesson from humanity's history is that pandemics happen all the time. Our ancestors couldn't do much about them, but our situation today is different — and so I think we should learn this history lesson and reduce the risk of pandemics. This chart is from @salonium's…

@peterwildeford If we can get the far-UVC thing to work, and it is safe for children, install it in every preschool and daycare
