If you knew Semien and Robert would be busts, and saw Polanco's injury history as well, how could you think we'd have a chance at the division title? Basically, the Mets traded Nimmo, Alonso, and McNeil for Bichette in terms of offense. They downgraded defensively (Soto is not better in left than Nimmo, Semien is not that much better than McNeil at 2nd, and Polanco has never played 1st). They added 1 starting pitcher and swapped out 2 relievers for Diaz (which, even before his injury, I'd say was an even swap). Yet people kept believing the entire team - including a rookie outfielder, 3 AAAA-level players (Baty, Vientos, Taylor), and a catcher who is very streaky would somehow be better than our 2024 team.

Risks? They were guarantees. And hate to say it, but so is Lindor at this point. His legs, his back... he's no longer at the peak of his career. And unlike 1st base, SS is a physically demanding infield position. So while someone like Alonso could probably go to age 36 without serious injuries (despite analytics), it's more likely for a SS to be injured.

I'd agree in some cases. But first Mendoza was saddled with a team of over-the-hill players and AAA scrubs. Hard to get them to play well - the ability simply isn't there. Now he's got half a team of scrubs and half a team of green rookies - they're hustling but they're also still learning and are gonna make a lot of mistakes. So while it might look like they're not prepared, in reality they just need a lot of time to learn.
