In 1991, David Robinson walked into a fifth grade classroom at Gates Elementary School in San Antonio. He was 25 years old, two years into the NBA, already the best center in the league. He made the kids a deal. Finish high school, and he'd give every single one of them $2,000 toward college. Ninety four kids. Then he left, and those kids went off to do the next seven years of their lives, and most people forgot the whole thing had happened. He didn't. In 1998, fifty of those students walked across a stage with a diploma. Robinson showed up. And he didn't hand out what he'd promised. He handed each of them $8,000. Four times the amount. To fifty kids, in cash toward college, seven years after making a promise to a room full of ten year olds who had no way of holding him to it. He never had to do any of it. He'd made the promise before most of those children were tall enough to reach a rim, and nobody would have said a word if he'd quietly let it go. Here's the thing about that decision. It didn't stop there. Robinson and his wife Valerie put $9 million into building a school on the East Side of San Antonio, in a neighborhood that didn't have one like it. Carver Academy opened in 2001, pre-K through eighth grade, mostly low-income families. Those kids learn Spanish, German and Japanese. They build robots. They run a broadcast studio. He also went back to school himself, in his forties, and finished a master's degree with a 4.0 while studying 10 to 15 hours a week, specifically so the Carver students would see him do it. His own explanation for all of it has never gotten more complicated than one sentence. "We do the right things because that's what God told us to do." The NBA gives out an award every year for community service. In 2003 they renamed it the David Robinson Plaque. Two rings. An MVP. Ten All-Star teams. Three Olympic teams. Hall of Fame. And fifty adults in San Antonio who got a check from a man who made them a promise when they were ten.

She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true? Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan. Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call. Lisa: I promise. Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy. Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.) Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol. Todd: I understand. I’ll be back. Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot. Lisa: What are you going to do? Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out. Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.

The only good news about the hilarious snub of Miami in this poll compared to how other teams were treated is that it will only help the coaching staff avoid the “rat poison” of high expectations. Already, Miami is being disrespected and the coaches can use that as motivation. Think about it: the only top 10 team to win decisively ON THE ROAD against a conference foe and they don’t move up a single slot? Seriously? But again, it’s meaningless in Week 2. See you in Vegas next January.

🚨WOW!!! A Bronx pizzeria owner saw a woman eating out of his GARBAGE. He walked outside, took her by the hand, led her in, and pulled a hot slice straight from the oven for her. So he grabbed a marker, wrote a sign by hand, and taped it in his window for the whole neighborhood to see: "To the people eating out of my garbage, I have more love for you than you think. Please come in and tell me you're hungry. I will forever give you a slice and fresh water to drink." When they asked him why, his answer was simple. "Right now, I think this world is shot. There's too much hate. Too much negativity. Why not put a smile on someone's face?" And it turns out this runs deep for Daniel. It goes all the way back to his mother, Carmella. "She had a saying in Italian. She used to say, 'a desperate person will always make a better decision on a full stomach than on an empty.' "It always stuck with me. So I feed people." A desperate person makes a better decision on a full stomach. That handwritten sign has traveled way past the Bronx now. Daniel says people are calling him from Texas, Arkansas, Hawaii, even Alaska, all wanting to chip in and buy slices for hungry strangers they'll NEVER MEET.
