STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE PRESIDENT TINUBU CONGRATULATES EKITI GOVERNOR OYEBANJI ON RE-ELECTION VICTORY President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulates Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji on his resounding victory in Saturday’s Ekiti State gubernatorial election. The President commends the people of Ekiti State for their peaceful and orderly conduct, and for reposing their trust in Governor Oyebanji. He also commends law enforcement agencies for maintaining law and order. He charges the Independent National Electoral Commission to continue to invest in conducting a peaceful, free, fair and credible election as we approach the Osun governorship election in August and the general election next year. With his overwhelming victory in the election, Oyebanji has emerged as the first governor in the history of Ekiti State to win re-election back-to-back. President Tinubu notes that Governor Oyebanji’s first term was marked by significant strides in infrastructure, agriculture, youth employment, education, healthcare, and rural development under the BAO agenda. The renewed mandate is therefore a clear vote of confidence in continuity, stability, and people-centred governance. President Tinubu urges Governor Oyebanji to remain magnanimous in victory and to carry all Ekiti people along as he consolidates on his achievements in the next four years. The President also commends all those who contested the election with the governor for exercising their democratic rights, saying it is now time to rally round Oyebanji in the task of taking Ekiti to the next level of governance. The President reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to partnering with the Ekiti State Government to deliver more dividends of democracy and accelerate the Renewed Hope Agenda across Nigeria. He prays for God’s wisdom, strength, and good health for Governor Oyebanji as he continues to serve the good people of Ekiti State. You can tell how shallow this is if you think he actually answered how to fix the electricity problem. Fixing a country or a sector isn’t copy and paste. You have to understand the exact problem we’re facing right now and he clearly doesn’t. That’s why he keeps saying “Egypt did it, Indonesia did it.” No. Nigeria electricity problem is completely different from what Egypt faced before they fixed theirs. Our major issues are already half-addressed by the Electricity Act of 2023. What were we facing before? 1. Legacy debt : You cannot fix the power sector without clearing that debt. N6.6 trillion is owed across the value chain. Any serious plan starts there. 2. Broken value chain: Generation → Transmission → Distribution. Right now, the bottleneck isn’t generation. It’s transmission and distribution. You can generate all you want, but if you can’t wheel it or collect payment, you’re dead. 3. Subsidy trap: You cannot talk about increasing capacity without killing the subsidy. If consumers don’t pay the real cost of service, the sector stays insolvent. You want 24/7 light? Then talk about a free market. Float the market. Let price be determined by cost, not by government fixing tariffs for GenCos and DisCos. We’ve had legacy debt since NEPA days. FG still owes about N6trillion. So don’t tell me “we’ll do what Egypt did.” Let’s talk Egypt: they borrowed about $35 billion in the last decade to fix power. Today, they’re selling off airports because they can’t recoup the money. That’s what blind copying gets you. This is the same Peter Obi who said we should copy Argentina’s model when Javier Milei came in. Look at Argentina now🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️ So if you’re truly intelligent and have the country interest at heart, you can’t still be echoing Peter Obi’s talking points on fixing Nigeria’s critical issues.
