"Your body can only use 25 to 30 grams of protein per meal. The rest is wasted." It's one of the most repeated claims in fitness nutrition, and it was built on studies that measured the right thing over the wrong window. The claim traces to dose-response work from the late 2000s. Moore 2009 and Witard 2014 fed young men escalating protein doses after leg-only exercise and measured muscle protein synthesis for about 4 hours. MPS plateaued around 20g. Fitness culture rounded to 30 and the number calcified. The problem was the clock: a 4-hour window can't see what a larger dose does over the hours that follow. Trommelen 2023 tested further. Recreationally active men got 0, 25, or 100g of milk protein after whole-body resistance training, with MPS tracked for 12 hours using a quadruple isotope tracer. The 25g dose lifted MPS for about 6 hours, then fell to baseline. The 100g dose was still elevated at 12 hours when the study ended. The advantage was modest early and grew large from hours 4 to 12, the exact window every prior study missed. And the oxidation argument failed directly: under 15% of the 100g dose was burned in the first 4 hours. The rest went into tissue. A big dose doesn't overflow the system. The stomach slows gastric emptying and the gut releases amino acids gradually, so each wave arrives to muscle still ready to use it. It isn't wasted. It just takes longer to process. Honest limits: this was recreationally active young men, not women, trained athletes, or older adults, and a 2024 commentary flagged that it may not transfer to resistance-trained women. It's acute MPS, not 12 weeks of hypertrophy, so more synthesis isn't a guarantee of more muscle. And it was liquid milk protein, not a meal. You don't need 25 to 30g every three hours to avoid wasting protein. Eat a bigger meal and your body uses it, the absorption just stretches out. Spreading protein across the day still helps satiety and hitting your total. But the biological case for rigid per-meal portioning is weaker than the industry sold for two decades. The ceiling was never in the muscle. It was in the clock.

Adequate strength makes falling less likely. The combination of being strong enough to not fall when you lose your balance and having denser bones if you do fall is much better than Medicare.
