Author’s Interpretation Response Chol Michael Maker When I wrote “In the Hands of Friends: A Cautionary Reflection on the Custodianship of Our Leaders,” my intention was to prompt a national conversation about a recurring and deeply concerning pattern in our political culture—namely, our tendency to entrust the lives and safety of our most senior leaders to friends and close associates, often in the absence of proper institutional safeguards. The article draws from the painful memory of the late Dr John Garang, whose tragic death remains one of the most haunting episodes in South Sudan’s collective consciousness. It is not merely the fact that he perished while visiting a friend that is troubling, but that the incident revealed a critical failure of responsibility. The mismanagement of the helicopter involved—by the very friends he trusted serves as a stark reminder of what can happen when personal relationships are allowed to supersede professional oversight. This reflection is not intended as an attack on individual friendships, but as a critique of a broader systemic issue. We must ask ourselves: why do we continue to rely on informal networks for matters as grave as the security of our national leaders? Why does personal loyalty still take precedence over institutional competence? When I pose the question—“Are we bound by some tragic inevitability to repeat the mistakes of the past?”—I am confronting a dangerous sense of fatalism that I fear has taken root in our national psyche. I reject the idea that we are helpless in the face of history. I believe that change is possible, but only if we are willing to be honest about the flaws in our current systems and courageous enough to reform them. This piece is ultimately a call for institutional strength and national maturity. If we are serious about safeguarding our future, then we must build structures that are not dependent on the goodwill or competence of a few individuals, but rather on the consistent professionalism of state institutions. The safety of our leaders and indeed the stability of our nation—must rest on systems that are transparent, accountable, and robust enough to withstand human error or personal bias. My hope is that this article encourages reflection, not just on past tragedies, but on the choices we continue to make. We honour the memory of our fallen heroes not by eulogising them alone, but by learning from their loss. If we are to move forward, we must transition from a culture of informal custodianship to one of institutional responsibility. That, in essence, is the core message of my article: that the protection of our leaders is not a personal favour, but a national duty.
