I get this question regularly, and I acknowledge that Israel faced a difficult challenge: It was hard to target Hamas without risking civilians. But my answer is: what I would not do is kill 31,000 people in Vancouver, including 12,500 children, and starve the entire population.

And to make things worse, Ben (mid-life crisis) King went with him. This means King would have been so focused on his efforts to get the top MFAT job, he would have gone along with Luxon's bullshit and told Luxon that he was the best PM the world had ever seen 🤮

By all reports, Luxon was embarrassing in Australia today with the ASEAN leaders. Completely tone deaf, arrogant, ran down NZ at every opportunity, and his counterparts ran rings around him.
This man is so entitled. He is such a shameful face for NZ to show to the world.

This is why we can't have nice things.
I fail to see how calling for the cessation of the slaughter of thousands of innocents is "embarrassing". Apologists for this slaughter are inhuman. Israel went past reasonable self-defence months ago. What they are doing now is simply base vengeance and a crime against humanity

Inhumanity is exactly the right word here. The utter disregard for the lives of innocents will be a stain Israel will never recover from.

What could it possibly mean? I mean, it has exactly the same colour and format as all other speed limit signs, but I'm just not smart enough to make the infinitesimal intellectual leap to understand. I feel your pain @NZMAGAMike - this is intellectual apartheid against us idiots

We are extremely concerned by indications that Israel is planning a ground offensive into Rafah. New Zealand has been clear from outset that the protection of civilians is paramount. The humanitarian consequences of a ground offensive would be appalling. -WP
An excellent take on Putin's historical analysis, the danger of viewing history through a modern political lens, and which should resonate with New Zealanders in the current environment.

The idea that any European New Zealander has ever experienced any level of INEQUALITY due to the existence of a foundational treaty between Māori & the crown, is an insult to the very nature of who we are. Grow the fuck up you narcissistic, arrogant, privileged wankers.🙄

If you know how policy is made, you know that’s absurd
@UnPressed This doesn't mean anything because no one can ever articulate what they mean by an 'independent' foreign policy - include Clark. It just means whatever is viewed as in the national interest of the government of the day.
What's the word for someone who wants to take lunch money from hungry kids and give it to private schools?

We all want to see good NZ/China relations but it is simply incorrect (or wishful thinking?) to describe NZ as neutral. NZ is allied to Australia, is a staunch member of the Five Eyes group and is strongly committed to liberal democratic values. That is not neutrality.
@NewZealandMFA Great to see, Minister Peters! I hope to see even closer relations between our two nations, especially in light of Australia’s deteriorating relations with China. NZ can hold a real niche position as a truly neutral state, which will do wonders for our role in the world.

Perhaps worth noting that the TVNZ journo targeted by David Seymour broke the story of an ACT Party candidate comparing vaccine mandates to Nazi concentration camps during the election campaign - maybe not a coincidence Seymour is singling him out by name? 1news.co.nz/2023/08/23/act…
Sure, free school lunches means "better concentration, behaviour, engagement and learning outcomes" for students, but sacrifices need to be made if we're serious about getting more landlords to millionaire status

We already are an active and engaged participant in the region, and have been for quite a while.
Great opportunity for PM Luxon to meet his ASEAN counterparts. Given he’s got to squeeze in 9 or 10 meetings in a day the focus will mostly be on getting to know each other, but also a chance to press the message NZ wants to be a more active & engaged participant in the region.
Hmmm. Beware of opening up Pandora’s Box. Vulnerable to single issue lobbies and zealous allies and hard to unwind. Small countries are particularly vulnerable to retaliation.
Huge news (for foreign policy nerds): the report of the expert advisory group considering the case for autonomous sanctions in NZ is finally out, and it does recommend "carefully constrained" legislation on the topic newsroom.co.nz/2024/03/05/exp…
Brutal.
Newshub pulled no punches in their coverage of Luxon's "entitlement" to paying himself thousands in taxpayer money to live in his mortgage-free apartment:
Christopher Luxon on why he took the money ...
Absolutely nails it 🔨 She is the antidote to the complete lack of decency and care shown by our government.
Fantastic speech from Chloe Swarbrick on the smokefree repeal bill. I completely agree - this policy is contrary to all evidence, that the members of this government are the “bad guys”, and that it’s a dark day in NZ. Full speech in comments below #nzpol
I would have thought that supplying organised crime with military style weapons would be a bigger problem than allowing gang patches.
Beyond shocking: new #NZ conservative Govt is re-examining country’s strict gun laws. “Everything is on the table, including changing the existing licensing regime & re-introducing the military-style weapons used in the 15 March terror attacks.” Dangerous: 1news.co.nz/2024/02/28/sem…
In 2024, Calgary, the city where Seymour was claiming in 2010 that public transport would never work, has a light rail network with the 2nd-highest ridership in North America (it runs on wind-generated electricity) and the most extensive walk-and-cycle network on the continent.
Here's a Canadian-accented David Seymour arguing against funding public transport on behalf of Atlas Network partner & climate change denialists, Frontier Centre for Public Policy.
Awkwardish afternoon in Parliament for the Govt parties defending actions on guns and smokes: a) reform of Arms Act and possibility of lighter regulation of military style semi-automatics b) winding back the anti-smoking law to drop Labour's late 2023, extra measures

Reprinting every dumb culture war press release that gets sent out isn't good journalism
Interesting to note that yesterday ACT issued a press release regarding the Auckland Museum and I was the only person to run the story … in the entire country. Makes you think about what other stories aren’t being covered.
