The results (pictured): I think it's safe to say that Calgary is NOT funneling all its art money to foreign artists

@yyc_bob @nut_meggy @CameraGuyNick I think asking about bias is a fair question to ask...but def above my pay grade to answer :P Though, your question also goes back to my NHL comparison: there IS a total bias against Calgary citizenry being on the Flames--unless, of course, they're good enough to be in the NHL.

Is having the Rolling Stones (or what have you) play in YYC bad for the city's art/music culture?

In April 1985, an extraordinary event took place over the Irish Sea, captured by Adrian Meredith in what would become the only photo of Concorde flying at supersonic speed. Adrian, who was flying a Royal Air Force (RAF) Tornado jet, had the opportunity to participate in a planned rendezvous with the legendary Concorde. The Tornado, a versatile and powerful combat aircraft developed and used by the RAF, was primarily designed for air defense, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions. While it could match Concorde's cruising speed, its fuel consumption rate was significantly higher, allowing it to sustain that speed only for a matter of minutes. Despite the Tornado's capabilities, capturing the iconic photograph posed a unique challenge. To maximize its speed and keep up with the Concorde, the Tornado was stripped of all non-essential equipment. The crew made every effort to maintain the pace, racing to catch up with the Concorde as it soared through the skies. However, due to the Tornado's limited endurance at high speeds, the crew had to make the difficult decision to break off the rendezvous after just four minutes. Meanwhile, the Concorde, an engineering marvel of its time, continued its journey, gracefully cruising towards its destination at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Despite the Tornado's formidable capabilities as a combat aircraft, it could only briefly keep pace with the Concorde's supersonic flight. The juxtaposition of these two aircraft highlights the distinct roles they played in aviation history—the Concorde as a pinnacle of supersonic passenger travel and the Tornado as a versatile military workhorse. Together, the Tornado and the Concorde symbolize the remarkable advancements in aviation technology during the late 20th century. Their fleeting rendezvous over the Irish Sea and the remarkable photograph captured during that encounter stand as a testament to the ingenuity, dedication, and pursuit of excellence that define the aviation industry.

If you grew up in the Edmonton area, as I did, then chances are you knew who Bill Matheson was. Let's learn a bit about this meteorological legend! Bill Matheson was born on April 26, 1926. He enlisted in the Second World War at 17 and served as a paratrooper. After he left the army, he joined the meteorological branch of the Transport Department in 1948. In 1954, a friend told him about a new TV station in Lethbridge and bill started a call-in show called "Phone Bill" on CJOC. He then became the weathercaster at the station, remaining there until the 1970s when he went to ABC in New York. He left after two years and came to Edmonton's CJCA radio station where he and Bill Jackson had a show called the "Bill-and-Bill" show. He also joined CITV-TV (now Global Edmonton) around this time as the weathercaster. It was that role that made him a local legend. As a weathercaster he was known for using Shakespearean language on the air like "gather ye rosebuds, while ye may" and "darkling shadows on the weather map." He was famous for his phrases such as "That most dreaded of all meteorological phenomena, the Siberian High" and "Keep your eye on the Idaho High". As technology advanced, Matheson stayed true to his roots by always using a stick with a felt marker, a weather board and a long pointer that he bounced off the ground after every forecast. In 1995, he was voted the Best Weathercaster in the World. In November 1999, he retired from television and his final broadcast on ITV (now Global Edmonton) featured a sendoff by the Edmonton Police Pipe and Drum, two fans who snuck into the last show and the raising of his final weatherboard to the rafters. That weatherboard is still on display at the Global Edmonton studios. Matheson helped inspire many others to become weathercasters, including the person who replaced him, Claire Martin. In 2000, 2001 and 2003, Claire Martin was named the Best Weather Presenter in the World. Matheson died on Sept. 19, 2006. @wnt_news @warhammer Thanks! Yeah, these were envisioned as orcs from the realm of Angmar (before MESBG adjusted everything from Angmar to be absolutely S P O O K Y. The oranges used are meant to reference the Witch King's fortress of Carn Dûm.
