I feel like it does actually say something that this undercover reporting was done by an independent outfit while the British press were busy hounding a black professor to his death. But I wouldn't say it's discrediting for *them*.

Though we would *also* want a wide range of detectors to find corresponding results, to guarantee that this isn't a fluke and also to probe its properties in different conditions

@stonderlor64239 @martinmbauer The blobs in the upper band of black points are gammas! We get a broad spectrum of beta emissions, and a narrow peak from monoenergetic gammas (from Ar, Rn, and internal Xe decays, among others)
The LZ dark matter search has observed a single unexplained event Many discoveries have begun with a single anomalous event, but so have even more false alarms. So we wait. Typically, direct-detection experiments have excellent control over their backgrounds
Our new results are out! We have observed a single nuclear recoil in our detector that we find difficult to explain with our background model. Could it be a hint of dark matter? It’s far too early to say, but it’s certainly intriguing! #darkmatter

The LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter detection experiment, supported by @ENERGY's Office of Science, has recorded a single particle interaction that researchers are having difficulty explaining with known background signals from normal matter. Dark matter has never been directly detected.

@jwuphysics @lzdarkmatter Our data quality team reduce these by orders of magnitude, but some slip through the cracks: we predict 2.7 in this search, and a fit gives 2.6. And notably, mostly at low energies: the number predicted by the candidate event are orders of magnitude lower still 👀
@jwuphysics @lzdarkmatter The blip at the bottom of the plot (1000phd S2) is likely what we call an accidental coincidence event: a flash of light and a burst of electrons in the detector close enough to one another to be indistinguishable from a real scatter
Exciting results from LZ this morning! But even more exciting that A: we have other liquid noble experiments to perform an essential cross-check, and B: we have hundreds of live days of data ready to analyze soon! 🤩
