@marmobet I was only talking about this day recently. I thought the last fav was a moral, the superstitious part of my brain was saying no way all the favs can win. After the drift late on, I ended up betting it. The drift makes sense now, great reading.

The NHF @Southwell_Races yesterday was worth 25% more than the same race in 2016. Over the same period the minimum wage cost for 21-25yo’s has risen by 83% and the cost of feed by approx 65%. These are core costs for trainers but don’t forget ERNIC, energy etc which have also risen exponentially. To an extent this is reflected in increased fees but poor returns is why Owner base is shrinking followed by the Training & Breeding industries. Over the same time period the total income from the betting industry to racing (levy, media rights and sponsorship) is estimated to have risen from £220m to £425m (+£205m). Total prize money in 2016 was £137.6m and in 2025 was £195m (+£57.4m). Surely Prize Money should have risen in line with income from bookmakers? The reality appears to be a shortfall of approx £150m which is why participants feel shortchanged and are wondering where all the money is going? (Figures not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but they tell the story of why we are where we are)

Another day and another good trainer packs up. Sensible for Noel but sad for the sport, the only way to turn the sport round is radical reform of prize money to create sustainability at all levels. Noel’s last winner would have earned £1917 for the Owner… says it all, completely

Disqualification was clear here. I think the real question is, why did they race 20 wide in every race in the height of summer, which no doubt had a big part to play in this incident.

Major controversy at Limerick as the well-backed Marian Avenue (trained by Charles Byrnes and ridden by Philip Byrnes) was disqualified after winning a handicap hurdle. As well as everything else, it is notable for being a rare case of the dangerous riding rule being applied.
