#OTD in 1917, The Queen's Hospital opened to provide pioneering plastic surgery to WW1 soldiers. The hospital was led by Harold Gillies (the 'Father of Plastic Surgery') and had over 1000 beds. #Histmedicine #histnursing

On this day, 13th August 1910, Florence Nightingale died. At 90 years old, Nightingale had lived a long life full of so many different achievements that we still celebrate today. It is said Florence fell asleep at about noon and did not wake again. Let’s remember her legacy.

Mary trained under the apprenticeship system during what I call the heyday of the handmaiden image. But exam papers highlight that the stereotype does nurses a disservice as the questions allude to the reality that Mary and her cohort were intelligent practitioners. 8/12
Mary started her RN training in 1942 at Sheffield Royal Infirmary and qualified in 1945. In the Atack collection are various 1940s General Nursing Council exam papers providing insight into the nursing syllabus of the period. #HistNursing 7/12
Check these out! 🤩 Mary served with the @BritishRedCross and kept her BRC identity card, as well as her national identity cards and soldier pay book. And look at that VAD patch! It would have originally been sewn onto an armband and worn on the left arm. #HistNursing 6/12
When war came, Mary signed up to the Civil Nursing Reserve, reporting for duty first at a local sanatorium before working in the York Military Hospital and Camp Reception Stations in two British prisoner-of-war camps. And she kept some incredible documents!… #HistNursing 5/12
Mary clearly showed a keen interest in nursing; she was an active member of the local @stjohnambulance brigade, rising to the divisional secretary but gaining first aid and home nursing certificates along the way. #HistNursing 4/12

Mary served during WW2, witnessed the introduction of the NHS and rose through the ranks from auxiliary to matron. She had the remarkable foresight to keep key documents from her life, and I now have the privilege of being the first historian to analyse them. #HistNursing 2/12

So what’s next? @PennineHeritage and I are creating a project for Key Stage Two students where we’ll introduce them to the history of nursing during WW2 through Mary’s perspective. It’ll be an immersive experience and a great way for kids to get hands-on with history. 11/12
