@Oggie_A @Helenreflects though, yeah, he sure is doubling down there. maybe his time period’s output had something to say about it. coal and newly torn up countryside etc.
@Oggie_A @Helenreflects i think his point is carried by the simple fact that we say, w/out controversy, something is “utilitarian” or “functional” (understood to be not lovely but to purpose). whereas a lot of what makes artifacts lovely comes from design concern. i drove an ugly car i was thankful for!

Out of curiosity - I feel like I frequently meet adults who express that when they had a severe injury as a child, their parents didn't believe them and if/when they did get care, their parents never apologized for almost killing them. Is this common?
Google seems remarkably confused about my identity.
@Helenreflects I was really sad for him. Like that thing about wanted to be read in 200 years... That's simply so susceptible to randomness that there's absolutely no way to guarantee getting even close to. That shouldn't be anyone's goal or their metric of success. I hope he can find peace.
@Helenreflects I grew up near a physics lab (the one on L.I.) where PhDs did physics work, and they considered themselves physicists, not professors of physics. No problems there with self-esteem! and some of my favorite poets - Richard Wilbur, Yvor Winters - were professors, but poets first.
One good thing about working on something that only a handful of other people in the world care about, being Latin American, and not having been trained at an "elite" institution (not even at the regional level) is not caring about the prestige game and still surviving just fine.
Elitism, jockeying for positions, etc. etc. It's all so toxic, it preys even upon the "winners" of the game of academia. I think it got to me too--there's just no way to insulate yourself. We need systemic and deep change, we need to try to reverse the course.
Are people just...unaware of the noise they make? I love summer weather but the constant barrage of extremely noisy, whining, shrill, gas-powered lawn maintenance equipment is a fking nightmare. Not a day goes by from April through October that someone isn't making loud noise.
@Helenreflects It is a little different in Europe and Asia, where highly placed academics are treated like an aristocracy. Here, we expect them to praise Dylan and Coltrane and to be humble about their lack of real world experience.

@Helenreflects Didn’t he say that something to the effect that true greatness as a philosopher was people talking about your work hundreds of years later? It might be true but it’s a problematic goal at the individual level because you can’t possibly know you’ve attained it.

wait, did the governor of South Dakota just brag in her book about shooting a young dog she could not effectively train as a sign of capacity and grit? Getting a puppy, training it, and having it come out "wrong" is not, I repeat, is not the puppy's fault.
