Andy Burnham's business rates proposals would lead to significant food price inflation. Here's why: He has proposed abolishing business rates entirely for shops, cafes, & hairdressers; increasing the business rates exemption from £12k to £18k tapering to £21k, & implementing a 20% rates cut for pubs, clubs & music venues This would cost respectively £6.5bn, £800m & £120m. He claims the money can be recouped from higher taxes on large e-commerce warehouses / tech giants’ warehouses. This is pure fantasy. The government says its high-value multiplier will make 1,900 distribution warehouses pay about £90m more a year. To cover the cost of Burnham's rate reduction elsewhere, their bill would have to go up by £7.4 billion a year, i.e. many multiples higher Amazon's warehouses have a rateable value of some £60-£70m. The biggest operators of distribution warehouses are in fact supermarkets, notably Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, M&S, John Lewis & Ocado. Even if Burnham waters down his unworkable £7.4bn scheme to say only £1bn that additional cost is going to be passed straight through to consumers. Amazon will also pass on the increased costs to its 30m British customers. People won't be happy. It's sad that Burnham won't countenance the only real solution, which is to reduce public spending.

Everyone gets emergency fund advice wrong. They all give nonsense blanket numbers that are totally arbitrary but help them sell whatever they are selling. Heres the reality. No one can recommend how much emergency gund to have without knowing the volatility and portability of your income sources (in most cases your job).....and your expenses. What matters is how quickly can you replace the income you need to cover your expenses. If your job requires many months to get hired elsewhere you need more emergency fund. If you're super portable, you need less.

Tax allowances have been stuck in the permafrost, sometimes for decades, reports a study by the Association of Taxation Technicians Absurdly the £3,000 annual gift exemption for inheritance tax purposes — hasn't changed since 1981. In today’s money it would be worth almost four times as much or £11,800 The inheritance tax threshold has been stuck at £325,000 for 17 years ago and is now frozen until 2031. If it had risen with inflation, it would be around £525,000, 60% more. The rent-a-room scheme allowance has been frozen at £7,500 since 2016. It should be £10,500 today. If the higher rate income tax threshold was not frozen at £50,270, it would reach £70,000 by 2030. All these allowances and thresholds should be legislated with a built-in inflation adjuster such that they increase automatically in line with inflation each year. US tax thresholds are raised automatically each year in line with inflation. That's a key reason why US thresholds are so much higher than British ones. You have to earn $640,600 in the US in order to pay the top income tax rate of 37%. In Britain, the figure is almost 10 times less. Here earn just $66,000 US dollars (£50,270) and you start paying a 40% tax rate.
