As Americans, we need to do a better job in preventing illicit drugs from entering our country, which dramatically causes widespread drug abuse, which is a $193B annual economic burden.
The National Archives found that the annual economic impact of drug abuse is $193B (in 2007). At least $120B was lost due to a lack of productivity caused by drug abuse, $11B was spent on healthcare costs, including drug treatment and drug-related medical consequences, and another $61B was spent on criminal justice costs, with the majority of the cost stemming from criminal investigation, prosecution, and victim costs.
