I do not know why Gayton McKenzie speaks so confidently about things he clearly does not understand. It is embarrassing when a cabinet minister appears unaware of how diplomatic passports work. A diplomatic passport is not reserved exclusively for diplomats, ambassadors or presidents. Around the world, governments have often issued diplomatic passports to individuals who have brought distinction, honour and international recognition to their countries. Outstanding athletes, artists, musicians, cultural icons, business leaders and other distinguished citizens have, on occasion, been granted diplomatic passports or equivalent travel privileges in recognition of their contributions to the nation. In the case of Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, the Somali government confirmed that it issued him a diplomatic passport to facilitate his travel to the FIFA World Cup after he became one of Africa’s most celebrated referees and was named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year for 2025. Somali officials have publicly stated that the passport was issued because of his historic achievement and to assist him in representing Somalia on the global stage. Artan became the first Somali ever selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup and has been widely recognised as one of Africa’s top match officials. His achievements have put Somalia on the international football map and inspired millions of young Africans. What is worrying is not that Gayton McKenzie got it wrong. Everyone makes mistakes. What is worrying is that he chose to speak with such certainty about a subject he clearly had not taken the time to understand. Ministers have a responsibility to be informed before making public pronouncements, particularly on matters involving diplomacy and international affairs. A little research would have shown him that diplomatic passports are sometimes awarded as a national honour and a practical tool to assist distinguished citizens representing their countries abroad. That is not unique to Somalia, and it is certainly not unique to Africa. Diplomatic passports have been issued to many people who are not politicians or career diplomats. For example, boxing legend Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines, football stars Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast and Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon, musician Youssou N’Dour of Senegal, long-distance running icon Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, and now Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan have all been granted diplomatic passports or diplomatic status by their governments. The suggestion that only politicians or diplomats can be issued diplomatic passports is therefore incorrect. I have noticed a certain interesting trend with Gayton McKenzie. Most of the time when the American government makes a mistake, he comes out to defend it. I wonder why he does that. From the issue of visas to the political standoff between South Africa and the United States, he has consistently appeared to side with America, even in instances where many believe it is wrong. It is a pattern that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

I want to thank Zimbabwean dancehall star Winky D for the very insightful message in his new song, Chivanhu. He touches on a serious topic that I have advanced on this page for years, respecting our past, respecting our ancestors, and refusing to be held hostage by foreign religions brought to us through colonial rule and missionary indoctrination. A people who do not understand their past, who embrace other people’s ancestors while disowning their own, and who disparage their history are bound to struggle. Africa continues to face challenges because many of the things we consider important are not rooted in our own history, culture, and experiences. You cannot be more Muslim than Muhammad, and you cannot be more Christian than the people among whom Christianity first emerged. Part of the success of the Chinese, whom Winky D references in his song, has been their authenticity, confidence in their own civilisation, and belief in themselves. I am not a Christian because I hate Christianity. I am not a Christian because I do not believe my identity can be rooted in a foreign religion whose foundations were built by other people’s ancestors while requiring me to disconnect from my own. Every people who have risen and prospered have done so by understanding who they are, where they come from, and what values define them. Self-respect begins with knowing your own story before seeking validation in someone else’s. Winky D has truly matured into an artist who does not follow the wind, but has become the wind itself, the one that others follow. Consummate artists do not chase narratives, they shape them. They do not merely reflect society, they challenge it, provoke thought, and help direct the national conversation towards issues that matter. That is what separates entertainers from cultural icons. The greatest artists leave a lasting imprint on the conscience of a nation. Well done to Winky D and his team for producing work that stimulates thought and encourages introspection. Kirsty Coventry was a brilliant Olympic swimmer. She is not an administrator. She does not have the capacity to do the job. She is the worst Sports Minister Zimbabwe has ever had. When we said it at the material time, people thought we were politicking. We were not. The evidence is right before you. For those who were in doubt, here is your answer. She is not capable of doing these jobs. It is like people who are brilliant footballers but will not necessarily make brilliant football administrators. The problem with various societies is that they assume because you were a brilliant swimmer, you are going to be a brilliant President of the International Olympic Committee. Just like a journalist, you can be a brilliant journalist, but it does not mean you are going to be a brilliant media owner. You can be a disastrous media owner and yet be a brilliant journalist because the two roles require completely different skill sets. Kirsty Coventry was good in the swimming pool. She is an incompetent manager. She is an incompetent administrator. This is self-evident from the disaster she left in Zimbabwe. She presided over the Sports Ministry for one and a half terms from 2018 to 2025, during which Zimbabwe could not play football inside Zimbabwe. Up to now, Zimbabwe’s home games are played in South Africa, sometimes in Rwanda. It is embarrassing, and it happened under her watch. She is simply incompetent. The failure, even at a small level like Zimbabwe, to ensure that stadiums in our country are functional, and to go to Cabinet and fight for those stadiums to be fixed, simply shows how incompetent she is. She was a brilliant swimmer, we cannot take that away from her, but she has been a disastrous manager. The tragedy is that many people are mesmerised by her past as a swimmer and then conflate that with the new roles she has taken up after her swimming career. Zimbabwe’s inability to host international football matches on home soil during her tenure was not a minor administrative detail. It was a national embarrassment that reflected weak leadership, poor coordination, and a failure to prioritise basic sporting infrastructure. Sporting excellence in the pool does not automatically translate into administrative competence in government or the international stage. The two require completely different skill sets, strategic planning, political negotiation, budgetary discipline, and institutional management. Being exceptional in one field does not guarantee effectiveness in another, and that distinction is precisely what many people refuse to make.
