It's 10 years today since the death of Charlie Gillett, author ('The Sound of the City'), radio DJ and one of the catalysts of the world-music movement. He was my friend for 40 years and I miss him greatly.
A shame that Jim Mullen's Organ Trio performed so well but to a sparse audience at the Vortex on Saturday; the World Cup effect, I guess.
Joe Henry's South Bank gig was a gem (with Billy Bragg, Chas & Dave and Linda Thonpson in the audience!); fine new 'Invisible Hour' CD, too.
Dr John's tribute to Louis Armstrong at the Barbican on 15 November as part of London Jazz Festival - can't wait!
Still only May, but there must be a fair chance that Louis Moholo-Moholo's Quartet gave the gig of the year at Cafe Oto on Monday night.
Loose Tubes at Ronnie Scott's last night - a gas! The old stuff sounded better than ever, the new material was excellent; a new CD, please!
Keith Tippett Octet at the Vortex on Friday - as good a gig as I've seen for a long time; what a great band!
Ahmad Jamal's RFH concert last night - terrific; nice of him to take time afterwards to autograph his great new 'Saturday Morning' LP.
'Muscle Shoals', a really good film about some of the greatest music ever recorded - but could have done with more Dan Penn and less Bono?
Marc Ribot Trio, with Henry Grimes on bass, in great form at Cafe OTO last night; looking forward to their second gig there this evening.
Mike Gibbs band in great form at Kings Place on Saturday as part of Whirlwind festival; much credit to Michael Janisch for arranging it.
Bright Phoebus concert on Friday at the Barbican - a special evening. It seems incredible that this wonderful music is not available on CD.
Arve Henriksen's "Solidification" vinyl box - 7 LPs, plus 2 DVDs - looks like the first essential purchase of 2013.
Django Bates' Beloved in terrific form at the Vortex on Friday - one of the best piano trios around; a genuinely new take on Bird's works.
Aimee Mann at the RFH on Tuesday; nice gig, good band, great songs - I really don't agree with the tone of the review in today's Guardian.

Went to Oxford Street HMV to buy a Necks CD; sold out! Came out instead with Elina Duni's 'Matane Malit' on ECM; fabulous recording.
Kenny Wheeler in fine form at the Vortex last night. Nice band - Sulzmann, Parricelli, Laurence, France; hope it's recorded.
Saw Chekov's Three Sisters at the Young Vic yesterday - superb acting and staging and a great reading of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit!
Sun Ra Arkestra on Saturday - I bet the Barbican has never seen anything like it; free form jazz as vaudeville act - tremendous stuff!

This is very sad news. Michael Cuscuna was responsible for countless priceless jazz reissues and anthologies on the Blue Note, Impulse and Mosaic labels, in particular. A producer of impeccable taste and wisdom who felt the music’s heartbeat. And an extremely nice man, too.
We are heartbroken by the news that our dear friend, revered producer & Blue Note historian Michael Cuscuna, has passed away at age 75. It would be impossible to overstate Michael’s importance to the Blue Note legacy which he worked tirelessly to fortify for nearly 50 years (1/3)
