How often do footballers actually get paid? Here's a number you've heard a thousand times. "£200,000 a week." That's how the media quotes a top footballer's wage. So you picture a Friday, a bank alert with 200k landing in it. No, it doesn't work like that. And that phrase, "a week," is a leftover from another era. Let's go back to January 1961. English football scrapped the maximum wage, a rule that had capped players at £20 a week and Fulham make Johnny Haynes the first £100-a-week footballer in Britain. Cos back then, footballers were working-class men, paid a weekly wage like every other labourer in the country. So the game quoted their pay by the week, and it never stopped. Sixty years on, the numbers are unrecognisable and very much different from back then. According to Capology, the football salary database, Erling Haaland signed a deal in January 2025 worth around £525,000 a week, roughly £27.3 million a year, the largest in Premier League history. And it isn't just the elite that earn these numbers. According to the same data, the average Premier League player earns in the region of £60,000 a week. The average. In one league. That's more than the annual average wage in the country. But here's what most fans get wrong. That "per week" figure is a headline, not a payment schedule. Footballers are paid monthly. Almost always. Just like you. Just like me. Take Haaland's £525k a week, times 52, divide by 12, and the real monthly deposit is just about £2.27 million. It is still crazy money. But paid the boring way everyone else gets paid. But the salary is only the base. On top of it is appearance fees, win bonuses, clean-sheet bonuses, Champions League qualification bonuses, loyalty payments and image rights sometimes ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions. And they don't all land on the same day. A bonus for reaching a certain number of games might come months after the season kicks off. A sign-on fee is generally often split into instalments across the length of the contract, not dumped in on day one. So a player's "wage" is really a base salary wrapped in a web of side-payments, each ticking on its own clock. At elite level, it is often enough to live on. The one that was so good they named it twice attests to that. Which is why, when someone shouts that a player "wasn't paid," you should slow down. Sometimes it's money that simply wasn't due yet. And sometimes it's real. And here's the thing clubs quietly pray players never learn. Since 2018, under Article 14bis of FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, if a club fails to pay a player two monthly salaries when they fall due, the player can put the club in default in writing, give them 15 days to fix it, and if they still don't pay, walk away for free and claim compensation. So no, a footballer doesn't get a fat envelope every Friday. He gets a monthly salary, a stack of bonuses on separate clocks, and a set of legal protections most fans never think about.
