ARTIST: Steve McNiven (instagram.com/mcnivenart/) Maybe I’m a little late to the party, but I finally snagged a copy of “Daredevil: A Cold Day In Hell” the other day from Books with Pictures in SE Portland (go check them out, that shop rules) and was just blown away by Steve McNiven’s art. Steve’s art has always been great, but this felt like a whole new spin from what I’d been used to seeing from him – very Frank Miller inspired while still feeling wild, chaotic, and fresh. McNiven feels like a guy who can do anything, and his projects from the aforementioned Daredevil book, “Old Man Logan,” “Civil War,” and “Death of Wolverine,” among many others, show just the sort of versatility and fun he brings to every project he works on. Passive income. Barry Windsor-Smith’s “Weapon X,” considered by many to be the definitive origin of Wolverine, is being published in a glorious black and white oversized hardcover coming this November, which is no surprise because Barry Windsor-Smith is great at drawing, and any book that allows us to look in detail at said drawings is awesome. What is a little surprising is the publisher – the book is being released by Dark Horse rather than Marvel itself. We guess in a way it makes sense – why actually make the comics if you can get another company to just do the work for you and send you a fat cut of the money? It must make sense to a lot of people, because Fantagraphics is getting in on the action as well, also publishing three new collections of old Barry Windsor-Smith Marvel stories. ARTIST: Tomo Kitaoka (instagram.com/tomo_kitaoka/) It was Saturday afternoon and you’ll never guess where I was. Okay, maybe you did, it was a bar. Anyway, I was at the bar, and my wife who was out kayaking called me to come pick her up because she and her sibling were sick of rowing. She dropped me a pin on a map and told me to be there in an hour, but that was only a 29-minute drive from where I was, so on my way out there I took a quick pit stop by SideArc Comics in North Portland (stop on by!), where I found Tomo Kitaoka’s book “The Walking Cat: A Cat’s-Eye View of the Zombie Apocalypse.” Pretty much exactly what the title says, it’s the story of a man who rescues a cat and then the unlikely duo tries to survive a journey through the ruined world, and wow did I enjoy it. The drama? Harrowing! The zombies? Scary! And the cats? Adorable!!! It was an awesome read and I liked the book very much, but don’t take my word for it – go give Tomo a follow!
