Zarnitsa is Back: Russia’s Soviet-Era Youth War Games, Now with Drones The Soviet-era Zarnitsa youth military games are back on a large scale in Russia. Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer convicted of terrorism crimes, including conspiring to kill Americans, and a biweekly guest on Alex Jones’s program, recently attended one as an observer and reported on it on his YouTube channel. What is Zarnitsa? Zarnitsa is a Soviet-era game launched in 1967 by Marshal of Artillery and Hero of the USSR Vasily Kazakov. “The game was designed to teach schoolchildren military skills and instill patriotism” (Verstka, 2025). Bout recalls participating in the games in his youth and says that basically everyone at his school took part. The game usually involved two teams dressed in military gear, playing a version of capture the flag in simulated combat environments. Government-Backed Militarization of Russian Youth Shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin signed into law the creation of a new youth movement, soon named Движение первых (Movement of the First). Putin controls Movement of the First through a seat on its supervisory board and his direct control of the movement’s governing body (Meduza, 2022). Funding for the movement is estimated at $188 million. Registration for Zarnitsa 2.0 is reportedly done through the Movement of the First website, and 2026 youth registration is reportedly above three million (RIA Novosti). Zarnitsa 2.0 The 2026 version of Zarnitsa, as reported by Bout, involves drones, reconnaissance teams, combat squads, APCs, artillery, tanks, helicopters, simulated small-arms fire, simulated explosions, contested villages, and other realistic conditions soldiers are encountering on the Ukrainian battlefield. The instructors and commanders are veterans of the war against Ukraine and are teaching the youth what they learned. The Larger Pattern @Restitutor_ and FIR previously reported that Bout is a member of MKNE, alongside Apti Alaudinov, deputy head of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces. That directorate, recreated in 2018 on the model of the Soviet political administration, is responsible for the political loyalty of the Russian soldier. The militarization of Russian youth fits a larger pattern of Moscow reviving Soviet-era institutions, organizations, and figures — for example, the Dzerzhinsky statue erected in 2023 at SVR headquarters — to tighten social cohesion while it fights a war on a scale not seen since World War II.

Minor correction. Karaganov is not council of the wise. Andrey Piontkovsky coined that term for a small group which included Kissinger and Dimitri Trenin who is now president of RIAC. This was mentioned to give some backdrop to the context of the discussion because RIAC is a founding member of the Valdai Discussion Club which Putin has spoke at multiple times.
