Even I’m laughing at how badly my post aged - but there was not this kind of negativity towards Russell at the time of writing. If I told you after Melbourne that Antonelli would win 5 in a row and dominate the season in terms of pace, it would’ve been a clown show. Easy to quote in hindsight. At the time of writing - when Kimi stuffed it in the wall at Melbourne and couldn’t get off the line - everyone agreed. Nothing was suggesting the season would take the drastic heel turn that it has in terms of raw performance. I know Russell has had issues, but the speed is also not where it was either. Now things have changed, people will inevitably coming out. Easy to wait the wings rather than speaking your own opinions in the moment.

These cars were nice on the eye, but not functional in terms of following. The 2026 cars with a better engine would clear anything we’ve had since 2014 by a country mile. So let’s hope that happens over the next 2 years 🥂

For the record, if either Mercedes driver lose this WDC due to reliability, it is NOT bad luck as long as the share of reliability issues is spread evenly. It’s an active decision by Mercedes to sacrifice reliability for pure speed. Play those games, face the consequences. With a more reliable car, they’d have to sacrifice some raw speed - can’t have the best of both worlds. This is not like the late 80’s with McLaren, 2010 at Red Bull or 2016 at Mercedes where one driver in the team had significantly more reliability problems than the other. Assuming the cars were of the same specification - that is pure bad luck, by definition. When a team sacrifices reliability and both drivers suffer equally, however, that is not bad luck.

Whenever I see a team playing 10 men behind the ball, I always think back to when we faced Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the UCL Semi-Final in 2012. How Di Matteo managed that situation (with 10 men) is exactly what England lacked last night. That night in Barcelona, we pretty much had 9 players camped in our own box but it was clear we were looking for a counter - as we brought on Fernando Torres and planted him on the halfway line for the last 10 mins. It was a direct, like for like swap for Drogba. Even after Messi’s penalty miss, there was zero intention to take out our attacking threat. All it took was for us to punt the ball once and Torres was through on goal. Di Matteo never took off his attacking players to retreat - and that’s the blueprint we should’ve followed.

We’ve seen Hamilton become World Champion 7 (8) times. He can qualify P20 for every single race for the remainder of his career and my statement will not change. When he was required to perform, he performed. He has shown more bottle and mental resilience than any English sportsperson in our lifetime. We are just riding the wave now 😂

Every time he got the ball I was shit scared man. Even after his nothing first half I just knew he’d turn up. As long as we gave him half an inch of space, he was going to change the game and that’s exactly what he did with the cross to Lautaro. Inviting pressure against the literal GOAT is just a suicide mission, and Tuchel succeeded pretty well at it. Until our goal, we didn’t give him any space or time at all and we stopped after scoring.
