Tutto sembrava apparecchiato per un’altra vittoria di Lewis Hamilton: il britannico stava dominando la gara e aveva già costruito oltre sette secondi di vantaggio sul gruppo quando la Safety Car, entrata per il ritiro di Adrian Sutil, cambiò completamente una storia già scritta. Alla fine della pit lane si consumò una scena destinata a entrare nella storia della Formula 1. Con il semaforo rosso acceso all’uscita dei box, Kimi Räikkönen si fermò correttamente in attesa del via libera. Hamilton, probabilmente distratto dalle comunicazioni e dalla concitazione del momento, non si accorse della Ferrari ferma davanti a lui e la centrò in pieno. Pochi istanti dopo anche Nico Rosberg tamponò la McLaren di Hamilton. Per Hamilton e Räikkönen la gara finì lì. E mentre i due favoriti abbandonavano la scena, si aprì una possibilità che Robert Kubica non si lasciò sfuggire. Il polacco conquistò la sua prima e unica vittoria in Formula 1. Un successo dal valore enorme, completato dalla seconda posizione del compagno di squadra Nick Heidfeld che regalò alla BMW Sauber una storica doppietta. Fu il giorno più alto nella storia della squadra di Hinwil. Un team nato dalle ceneri della Sauber indipendente che riuscì a battere colossi come Ferrari e McLaren nel pieno della loro forza. Per Kubica sembrò l’inizio di qualcosa di ancora più grande.
