“I don’t get why teachers are quitting. They knew what they were signing up for.” NO, THEY DIDN’T!
@FixingEducation Remember that two-week stretch at the beginning of COVID when parents were all like “whatever teachers want, they deserve it”? Because they couldn’t deal with their own kid(s) at home? What a nice memory.
@FixingEducation I can't speak for new teachers but teachers 35+ likely became teachers expecting to recreate experiences similar to those they had. Culture, tech, research and resources have created situations that can rarely resemble those experiences and serve all learners & stakeholders.
@FixingEducation I agree with your point. Even if it closely resembled what they signed up for with in the first couple years. After 5 years it’s no where close. But this can be said about virtually all professions. Unless you’re a cashier at a Convenience Store.
@FixingEducation For teachers over 40( I phone era) it in no way resembles the job they chose or were trained for. I’d venture less than half would do it all over again. Today is less teaching and more social work/ psychologist / nutritionist / avoid lawsuits in regard to IEP.
@FixingEducation Truth. No amount of observation and student teaching can prepare you for the reality of teaching. I knew within two weeks I would eventually leave the classroom. I lasted four years.
@FixingEducation Also don’t forget…pre-2020: if you don’t agree with what’s going on, then just quit. Today: Why are all the teachers gone?
@FixingEducation I was 63k in debt and in my last semester to be a school counselor when Illinois unveiled tier 2 retirement and ruined my career right before it started.
@FixingEducation What we signed up for 20 years ago is not what we are doing now.
@FixingEducation They keep changing what you signed up for - and not in a good way.
