@Sara_Salt_ Snowy Grouoer are super tasty. Their meat is sweeter than most grouper. Off the NC coast they are plentiful and we catch many that are in the 40-50# range. Most lose their spots when they get over 40#. I hope you enjoy it!

There is indeed "some science to it". Sure, "match the hatch" can be important, but as far as colors we see that fish also see, the colors of the rainbow apply. Yes, black is a silhouette, but the top 3 colors that can be seen best in stained water and at depth are purple, blue, green, and in that order. However, the most important color that fish see, that we do not without use of a light, is Ultraviolet (UV). White, chartreuse, hot pink, florescent orange for example all reflect UV light. As does silver, gold, mylar, etc. If you shine a UV light on your soft plastics, you will find many that are not natural reflectors of UV that will still "glow" because of UV additives added during the manufacturing process (at least the best ones will anyway). In my opinion, if it ain't "bright" with UV light, it ain't right.

@AmputeeAngler We had another great late fall run of squid this year in Hatteras, NC. They seem to show up in the fall after a hard north blow and the water temp falls between 57 and 53° F (14-12°C). When the temp gets below 53°F (12°C) they start disappearing. Have you seen similar temps?

Happened to me in Hatteras while gigging. At almost the end of the night, we found one in the boat. After a bit of a struggle, managed to flip it out of the boat. That snake looked left, then right, saw no land nearby and decided the boat was the best place to be. With head and neck out of the water and looking like a cobra, it came straight toward the boat in a hurry. I sped up, and I swear that snake dropped the hammer and was headed to the boat faster than I have ever seen one swim. Had to speed up to greater than 10 knots to get away. 2 grown men refused to get off the bow the rest of the ride home.

I agree, there are many organizations that will “cherry pick” data in support of their confirmation bias. One of the many problems with MRIP is that there is no real transparency to the public of the actuals versus the estimates. Sure, you can query the MRIP site for estimates of fish caught, but you will not find the actual fish documented from the surveys anywhere on the site/query engine to my knowledge. You can download and process the CSV files, but it requires some advanced technical knowledge for the average person to be able to do so. It took me months to process all of the data, just to be able to really query the actual fish that were caught/observed, and this was with high end servers dedicated 24/7 to process the 40+ years of data. Once you have processed the data and find the actuals, it is horrifying how little data there is for many species and many areas. When you realize they shut down recreational Golden Tiles in the South Atlantic early one year because of only 8 actual fish documented in wave 1 (Jan-Feb) from 4 boat intercepts, it makes you wonder how good the “science” really is. Especially when the NOAA documented PSE score was 80% as quoted at the time. ACL was split 97% commercial and 3% recreational, and may still be. Is that really fair? I am not a member of the CCA or any nonprofit/political organization, but I agree for many species the allocations should be revisited. I also find it annoying that NC, SC, GA, and NE FL get punished for SE FL catches, when it is a separate beast and should be managed separately (think geographical distance to “the edge”/shelf). Many SE FL residents would argue it already is managed separately with all of the regulations. I think we can all agree there are many problems related to the data, or lack thereof, that is used to manage our fisheries.
