"Few now remember them," Tom murmured, "yet still some go wandering, sons of forgotten kings walking in loneliness, guarding from evil things folk that are heedless."
Many such cases, but the answer (of course) is to lead by example. *You* are a part of your People — for as long as *you* enact a culture, or speak a dialect, it exists. If it wanes then do so twice as much at twice as many strangers. Draw attention to it. Be striking, memorable.

Not just familiars — many stories across Britain tell of witches taking the form of hares. Though rarely used in modern fantasy or literature, this skill is near-ubiquitous in the folklore. In the New Forest it is still considered bad luck to kill a hare for this reason.

I'd always been *obsessive* about keeping the spines and covers fresh and uncreased on books, until I actually started writing them myself — a cracked spine means it's been read, and a dog-eared cover comes from regular use. Love to see them both now, like laughter lines.

We see the Hellmouth often depicted as wolven or canine — a possible echo or reflex of the various older mythic traditions of giant and/or multi-headed dogs guarding the underworld, which themselves likely stem from a common Indo-European original

The symbolism of the moon and the sun devouring children is of the passing days eating your childhood. The sun and the moon are the hard passage of time, actively in states of flux — the stars, on the other hand, are passive tranquility, stories, friends. #LegendaryWednesday

Time to revive the sitting sun.
Is there a word for this?
Moonlight was said, in the folklore of the New Forest, to be a necessary ingredient in charging magical objects, such as hagstones (stones with natural holes), witch bottles, and other charms or amulets. The more nights they bathed in the full moon, the more powerful they became.

A lot of overlap in the folklore with silliness and good luck — the phrase "God looks after fools and drunks" is still common, and the idea of the holy fool, or charmed dimwit, is a prevalent one, from the tarot card to Stan Laurel (& Hardy), from the "Jack" tales to Mr Magoo.

The BBC Christmas adaptation of MR James's Lost Hearts is absolutely spectacular television — eerie and ridiculous and genuinely chilling, with hurdy gurdy music that still haunts me (how often can you say that?). A dark and unnerving anti-Narnia, highly recommended.

Last night at a Christmas party I met one of the creators of the replica mummified hand at The Haunch of Venison (you can read about it here) as someone stole the original! I wonder if the demented whist player followed his hand?! 👻✋🏻 weird-wiltshire.co.uk/2021/05/25/the…

This idea of sprites in the Christmas trees is one that crops up repeatedly — in Britain if the decorations are not down by Twelfth Night the spirits get restless and wreak havoc in your home. It makes you wonder why we bring them in in the first place... #folklorethursday

@BoggartStones Love our dialect, it’s honest, rich and beautiful. It’s such a shame that words and phrases I regularly heard as a child are no longer in use.
@FindingFolklore It's from @FolkloreSociety County Folk-Lore Vol V, 'Examples of printed Folk-Lore concerning Lincolnshire.' Published 1908.
The chonchon legend - still remembered today - tells about the ancient belief that certain people can willingly become this creature. The Chonchon or Tue-Tue is a bird that brings bad omens and bad luck to the places it haunts. buff.ly/3VgfWBw

In folklore, hares are associated with spring, rebirth and magic. In many legends hares are shapeshifting creatures that are able to communicate with the Otherworld, and some hares were thought to be witches' familiars. #FolkloreSunday Art by Adam Oehlers
Dairy cottage, built in 1786 complete with a steep pyramidal thatched roof. It has a most delightful fully functional dairy room designed by Josiah Wedgwood, tiles & dairy utensils too. A slate roof was added after a fire in 1940. The interior survived. [email protected]
@booksandwellies Makes it so difficult when all that are in the shops are foreign ones. Generally I try to buy fruit and veg via local veg boxes but at some point in the past couple of months I was in a supermarket and literally could not find any British apples. It's a joke!
