WHEN PLATELETS RISE IN INFECTION We’re taught: infection → thrombocytopenia. But some infections raise platelets. Abscess. Empyema. Mediastinitis. IBD flare. Not time. Not severity. A different signal: IL-6 → TPO → thrombocytosis.

Even crazier ... patients who got irradiated units actually had a higher risk of needing an RBC transfusion shortly after!! #Hematology #MedTwitter #BloodBank

Even better, those same traits were linked to a lower chance of needing an RBC transfusion in the next 24 hours ... Why? Both obesity and SARS-CoV-2 are pro-inflammatory states which might make the donated platelets a bit more active 🤔

Ever give a platelet transfusion and the count just... doesn't budge? Next time don’t immediately blame it on the spleen while checking CBC at 4am 🥲 This is interesting study that units from obese donors with history of COVID might get you better response post transfusion !
