What the best Farmers do - Some Farmers do have em..... Riordan's Grain CEO Jim Roirdan had this to say during the week: "You need to be looking at them rather than looking for them”. What’s he talking about? Yep, Farm Inputs for Cropping Farmers. Like how on-Farm storage Grain gave the Grain marketing power back to the Farmers, on-Farm Inputs storage will give the timing and decision-making power into the Farmer's hands. Many Farmer's will say I can't afford to do this. Jim believes Farmers can't afford not to. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Have a great Saturday.
What the best Farmers do - They adapt to climate variability I just want to point out that when we talk about climate variability, we are not talking about net zero. Nigel Kerin has been talking about developing his Farming system around climate variability for years. It took me a couple of years to catch on to what he was talking about. And the other day I got it; it all became clear. You could argue that adapting your Farming systems to climate variability is as important as timing. They are probably closely related. The example Nigel gave me that got me over the line in my understanding was the purpose of the Feedlot industry in the US (Feed Yards). It’s because of the snow; calves can’t reach their potential growth rates in the snow. So they are sent to a Feed Yard. I urge every Farmer to look closer at designing their systems around Climate variability. These are where the opportunities are. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Have a great Friday.
What the best Farmers do - They want to keep getting better. One of the best things about what we do at The Farmers Club is that we get to engage with the very best Farmers going around. It’s like one continual masterclass. It's infinite; it never ends. On the back of that, we get to build a knowledge bank of all the little (and not-so-little) things that make a real difference. I presented a list of a dozen things the best Farmers do at a Farmer's board meeting the other day. They were humble enough to want to learn from others, even though they had a successful operation themselves (they employ 100 people). The best Farmers want to keep getting better. Join us here thefarmersclub.com.au Have a great Thursday.
What the best Farmers do - Why is timing a compounding thing? We asked our subscribers what separated the best Farmers from the also-rans. It was timing. Getting your timing right is crucial. That means plenty of preparation in advance. The good ones know when to execute. We say timing is a compounding thing because if you miss something or are late, it compounds in a negative way. You end up getting further behind. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Have a great Wednesday.
What the best Farmers do - How to get to the top 10%.... Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Yes, it's as simple as that.... We wrote an article in our newsletter with 3 bits of advice for young people who want to go places in Ag. It was basically answer or reply to any calls, texts, and emails. Don't be late and do what you say you are going to do. We had a heap of replies on this one. Here is a good one from a respected Ag person... Hi Dwain, I like your rules. Sometimes we just need to get the basics right. I had a Rep book a meeting with me one day to ask what he needed to do to become a good rep. I said, "Great question, get your notepad out. 1. Answer the phone when we call. 2. Return a call when we leave a message." His pen paused, waiting for more advice. And then he said, "What else?" I said, "Nothing else. If you do that, you will be in the top 10%." Have a great Tuesday.
What the best Farmers do - Have you had the crystal ball out lately? We are in a protein boom, right? And the best Farmers are taking advantage of this. Just knowing the world has fallen in love with protein means they can go harder, and they are. In business, we have to keep the crystal ball close handy, and not be afraid to see into the future a bit. The best Farmers are taking a glimpse around the corner to see what's ahead. Join us here thefarmersclub.com.au Have a great Monday.
What the best Farmers are doing Don't stay too long being a generalist.... Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au There is this Farmer in the Cropping game who, at the tender age of 30-odd (I don’t know his actual age), has become an influencer. Yer, people ask his advice on all things Cropping. How has that happened? Young people in Ag (we were all there once) start out as generalists and gradually become specialists as we get older. If you have been around the paddock a few times, then look back and think about how your Farming life has unfolded. So what happened with this young Cropping guy was that he turned specialist much quicker than most. He knew early what he wanted to do and pursued knowledge at an insatiable rate, made his mistakes early and learnt the caper backwards. So, if you want to be influential or if you want to get somewhere quickly in your industry, specialise quicker than others. The best Farmers are specialising. Have a great Sunday.
What the best Farmers do - The Farmers Club Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Are you servicing yourself? Someone said to me the other day that we have all these problems; they surface every day, and new ones appear from nowhere. But when you have a health problem, your problems go from many to just one. We service the Ute, we service the Tractor, but for some reason, as Farmers, we don't service ourselves. The switched-on people I know get a checkup each year, and they don't just get the regular "bloods"; they ask for extra checks, heart machine, brain scan, etc. When I was on the Farm, we had a Livestock Agent called Don Murphy, who served our family for 5 generations. He had a big gut on him; he smoked, he drank a lot, and he ate the wrong things. But he did his checkup each year, and all he wanted to know was where he was at. That's all. Are you getting your regular checkup?
Best part - Around 60 growers joined the new SwarmFarm AutoFill system in action alongside the SwarmBot platform and WEED-IT | Powered by Rometron integration. But the best part of the day wasn’t the demo itself. It was the conversations afterwards. Farmers standing around talking about: 👉 Running longer hours without extra labour. 👉 Reducing fatigue during Spray windows. 👉 Smaller, lighter systems instead of bigger. Machines. 👉 What Farming could look like 5–10 years from now. That’s the exciting part about this industry right now. Agriculture is starting to rethink assumptions that have existed for decades. Summary - This is exactly it. It’s probably the most important part of this type of Farmer get-together day. It’s the debrief afterwards. It’s where Farmers learn from each other. It’s where Farmers compare notes. It’s where Farmers gain confidence about what they are doing. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au
The Farmers Club newsletter - What my feeling was when I saw the green line graph for the first time. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au We love the green line graph (see below). But I was wondering what it meant to you? What is the feeling you get when you look at it? I remember the feeling I got when I first saw it. It was like a wake-up call, knowing that doing business in the Ag space from 2025 (when I first saw it) onward would require a new level of skills. I think, from that day on, I wanted this newsletter to be a vehicle for subscribers to help them stay on the green line. So that’s the focus now. We all need to be thinking about the things we need to do to help us stay on the green line forever, because the alternatives are not great. The green line graph keeps me focused and accountable. Have a great Thursday.
The Farmers Club Newsletter - It’s like one continual masterclass Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au One of the best things about what we do at The Farmers Club is that we get to engage with the very best Farmers. It’s like one continual masterclass. It never ends. We went through the dozen points and gave examples or told stories around each one. Sharing the information you gather with others gives you a level of influence. Do you want to be the one telling the good stories or passing on a little trick you learnt from a fellow farmer? Have a great Wednesday.
The Farmers Club Newsletter - What the best Farmers do. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Do you get frustrated becuase your too busy being busy? Does that stop you from onboarding ideas or getting access to the information others get? We all need to find time to learn. The best operators are, and because of that, they incrementally get ahead. You have to tap into sources that work for you. We think our content is good, but we also know that for you to value it, you have to get a tangible advantage from it.
The Farmers Club Stories - We love the content we deliver, but we know you couldn't give a toss about what we like or don't like. We know that you only care if our content works for you.... Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Our latest writings Will Angus steal Wagyu’s lunch? Wagyu is premium, but is there such a thing as too premium? Do you eat Wagyu? We attribute competitiveness to what happens in sport. But there’s somewhere else where the competitive juices flow. Down on the Farm…. Are you a competitive Farmer? The luxury Sheep Skin business that never made it…. Our guest writer, Caleb Schwartz, writes about being in control of control. How one business owner went from the red line to the green line in a matter of months. See the image below. A winery bought back it’s signiture best know wine label after it sold it 60 years ago. They called it a full-circle moment. What's something that’s done a full circle with you? 10 years is a long time as an employee with one company. 7 out of the 10 Farm Tender team has been there for 10 years. They tell us why they have lasted so long. Our guest columnist, Vic Hoffmann Dohle, outlines how we need to keep working on ourselves, especially as we get older. Are you adding value to yourself? We had a meeting with the financial planner this week. He said he has work for the next 10 years now, after the latest budget. One Farmer feeds his Sheep by plane. It's different, but I like his thinking behind it. We explain why. Darren Thomas from TFI said they are looking to other countries for growth. Are you hearing of other businesses taking their bat and ball elsewhere? Guest writer Bec Lindert wrote about her initial summary of the budget and how it’s going to affect her family. Have a great Saturday, and send us your email addresses to take advantage of our offer.
Offer - The Farmers Club Newsletter Try, but without the buy - Here is the offer. I will manually forward the full throttle newsletter to you for 6 days. No credit card, not committment, just a try, that’s all. All you have to do is DM me with your email address
It's not about the content we deliver; it's about what the content can do for you. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au
The Farmers Club stories - It's all about compounding your knowledge Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au Our latest writings: Could we see Farmers putting out forward contracts for Livestock? We go into more detail. One Farmer spent 7 days handing out how-to-vote leaflets and learnt more about our democratic process by just turning up…. I have thought long and hard about how AI is going to work with our Farmers Club newsletter. We relay our thoughts. Guest columnist Caleb Schwartz wrote about how the largest barrier to success is ourselves. Angus breeder Robert “Macka” MacKenzie has become a Water Farmer. It’s something he’s had in the pipeline for years.... Your data is your data, but it’s also someone else’s as well. We explain…. Our Ag women are the ones leading the way with AI. It’s a big trend as we found out on the weekend. Guest columnist Caleb Schwartz adds his 20 cents' worth to the recent Beef Central article around “Doing Nothing”. The US are pro-business, as one famous wine-industry family found out. She said they are doing what we are trying to kill off here. In life and in business, it pays to hang around or listen to the compounders. We explain further. In today’s world, anyone can be anything. We have gone past the day when you could only enter if you had a qualification. Our guest columist Micheal Bagshaw bravely talks bout his recent diagnosis with depression. Michael assured me he is fine, and all the power to him for relaying his experience to our subscribers. Guest columnist Caleb Schwartz asks a what-if: “I wonder how often the parts of ourselves we dislike are actually the parts with the greatest potential?” Have a great Wednesday, and subscribe to hear from The Compounders.
The Farmers Club Newsletter - The compounders Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au The compounders can also be specific people that you follow or like reading or hearing from. I reckon I have about 30. I don't talk to them face-to-face, but they always seem to have something constructive to offer.
The Farmers Club Newsletter - You need to operate in a spot where the best Farmers operate. Join us here - thefarmersclub.com.au What the best Farmers do - On Thursday, I was lucky enough to get a presentation gig at one of our Farmers subscribers’ strategic planning meetings. They are a decent-sized operation with 100 staff and 5 or 6 different divisions. One of the things I presented was a dozen things the Top Farmers do well. It made me realise what a privileged position we are in, because we have access to the best Farming and Ag business operations in the country. The transfer of wisdom and knowledge is what stands out.
