We may never know the full inventory of viruses held at the WIV before 2019, or whether it included viruses closer to SARS2 than RaTG13. But we now know that Daszak, the head of a EcoHealth, and the WIV were explicitly plotting how to withhold that information.

I have a number of issues with this. 1, Nobody has tried to qualify this data before when it suited them. In years where GWIS data showed lots of wildfires in Europe absolutely nobody said "Hold on, that includes Russia". 2, The CarbonBrief article says that the numbers are misleading this year because Russian non EU fires are down, in fact, the delta between EU and non EU is similar or less than recent years. YTD non EU makes up 44% of the data, in 2022, the year the article picks out for comparison, it was 39%. 3, There's no doubt 2026 has been a dry summer in many countries and wildfires are up accordingly. That's just logic. But weather is not climate.

An impassioned post from the Yorkshire Dales Moorland Group: Wildfire or managed fire, how can this be a contentious choice with all that's happening? Out of control fires are raging not just in Europe but in the UK. Thousands of homes have been evacuated, some have burned to the ground. Landscapes and habitats have been destroyed, possibly irrevocably, and heartbreakingly deaths have occurred. Reports have come in of Greek firefighters losing their lives trying to extinguish wildfires on the island of Crete. How can anyone ignore these events and advocate ideological policies for the UK uplands that directly increase wildfire risk? IF you didn't know, that's exactly what's happening. Yes we know, its utterly bewildering. Wildfire is a very real and growing threat here in the UK, we shouldn't need anymore evidence - its happening right now. These fires need only two things - fuel and an ignition source. The imposed land policies in place for the uplands are providing that fuel, all that's needed is the ignition and there is an increasing list of possibilities where that ignition will come from. Arguments can rage about how fires start but they all share one common denominator - FUEL. Currently in the UK we have landscape policy makers at DEFRA and NE who have absolutely no knowledge of working in the rural sector, particularly in the uplands. They have no practical, hands-on experience of actually managing vegetation or mitigating against wildfires and they certainly do not have any skills or expertise in fighting them. So why is there no collaborative engagement between the boots on the ground personnel and those in the government offices? Answers on a post card please. When these fires break out DEFRA and NE officials are invisible. They conveniently disappear entrusting the fire fighting to the local gamekeepers, farmers, volunteers and regional fire crews They might as well say "you WILL have this fuel thrust upon you and you WILL be expected to put it out". There is a choice that can be made to reduce these horrendous fire incidents and its right under the government's noses. Bring back controlled burning into our landscapes. Let the experts with the land based knowledge get back to what they showed in the past works in mitigating against these disasters. Let the moor managers create the fire breaks they once did using controlled burning techniques. Let them get back on top of fire prone vegetation just as they did before this woke rewilding ideology of leaving moorland plants to grow unchecked was added to the upland agenda. Policy makers don't seem to want to listen so here is a video showing what controlled burning actually looks like. Watch it and tell us it damages peat. You will not be able to.

I agree with @Iromg that Andy Burnham is the Mayor of Great Britain rather than a PM. The MSM are allowing him to avoid scrutiny, be extremely vague, applauding lacklustre speeches and unserious comms. Floating ideas to see how we respond is not a government with a real plan.

True that technical education needs more attention. Not true that we need schools spending less time teaching kids maths and English after age 14. It just isn’t true that all of our kids are academically excellent! The basics - maths and English GCSEs- last year 40% failed to pass. Meaning 40% of kids in schools did not hit the approx 20% pass rate for maths GCSE. Are we these great academic intellects? Is Burnham just saying ‘look, these kids just can’t learn this stuff so let’s give up on them?’ I kind of see why he might think that. But is it the right call? Are schools really not capable of getting our kids to learn 20% of the maths GCSE content? Maybe not. But it does seem a little sad to just give up.

Could not agree more with Burnham about technical education. The universalisation of academic education has been one of the great policy mistakes of the past forty years, and has led, among other things, to the multiplication of silly pseudo-disciplines (critical studies, etc)

Incredible fact. If we could simply reduce Disability claimants to the number before lockdown we would save £24 billion a year. Enough to fund a chunky part of social care. Cuts to benefits are vital.
