Someone paid off an outstanding electricity debt of ₦210,000 for an entire neighborhood. A problem that should ordinarily be NERC’s responsibility just so people could have light again. Instead of appreciating the young man, residents immediately concluded that he must be a “Yahoo Boy.” To them, he cannot possibly be a CTO, CFO, AI/ML Engineer, Fullstack Engineer, Cloud Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Product Manager, or Cloud Architect. It is easier to believe fraud than to accept that a young Nigerian can legitimately earn well through tech and choose to solve a community problem that may even have been affecting his ability to work. This is the sad reality of our society today: We have normalized suspicion so much that generosity now looks suspicious, competence looks illegal, and success must have a criminal explanation attached to it. A young man solved a problem for an entire neighborhood, and the reward he got was accusation and profiling. WE ARE DOOMED AS A NATION.
