Considered the most difficult ship rescue ever attempted, the SS Great Britain was towed 8,000 miles across the Atlantic. After being abandoned in the Falkland Islands for more than 30 years, world's largest ship finally returned to Bristol for extensive repairs. In 1949, Britain blew up the last surviving French-built ship from the Battle of Trafalgar. This French vessel survived the Battle of Trafalgar only to be captured by the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Implacable. She served the British for nearly 150 years. Despite its immense historical value, the ship was scuttled in 1949, but its origional stern was salvaged #history #maritime #britain
Just seen on #TheApprentice, Crossness Pumping Station, London is a Victorian engineering masterpiece. Constructed for The Great Stink of 1858, it was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "a Victorian cathedral of ironwork." An incredible survivor!
This is one of Bath’s rarest structures, but most people miss it! Before the 1830s, local residents funded their own security via private night watchmen who used shelters like this. Restored in 2012 to its original appearance, it remains one of the very few surviving examples of its kind in Britain. #Bath #History #Somerset

The Bright Star pub in Luton recently received a complaint from an ‘anonymous’ resident of a quintessential English village, objecting to the fact that it was flying the flag of St George. In response, the pub decided to take it down, and hoist a huge Union Jack. They told us: "We’re disappointed that someone takes offence by us flying our national flag. We are proud of our history, our heritage, our traditions and our culture and will never forget those that have fought, served and sacrificed so much to allow us to display our proudness and gratitude" #unionjack #Britain
