It is disappointing that Gwen Stefani is choosing to double-down on her Orientalism in 2023. I remember how uncomfortable her “Harajuku Girls” era made me almost 20 years ago, but it wasn’t so easy to share those feelings pre-social media. allure.com/story/gwen-ste…
For me, this is more than just cultural appropriation. At the heart of these types of attitudes (that a white American woman can just elect to “be Japanese”) is a failure to recognize Japan as a real place and Japanese people as real people.
@EricaKanesaka I think you need to move on from your hyper-sensitivity and find relevant issues to address…👍
@EricaKanesaka Obviously a lot of you did not read the whole article 🙄
@EricaKanesaka she identifies as Japanese, don't be a bigot.
@EricaKanesaka It's ain't comfortable to other East Asian people when Japanese talking about anti-Orientalism, it would remind people GEACPS and Pacific War. Can we get over it and be less sensitive?
@EricaKanesaka My understanding is Japan's popculture is one of the most cosmopolitan on the planet, akin to French or British. I see her comment as no different than saying "I'm French/Spanish/Italian" in a clearly figurative as opposed to literal sense.Ditto for Latin, if clearly not literal.
@EricaKanesaka Tbf, Italy & Japan were allies in WWII.
