Politicians love first-past-the-post because it means they can appeal to a minority of voters and still win a majority.
Reminder: Justin Trudeau became prime minister in 2015 when a majority-Liberal government was elected, with only 40% popular support. He promised to end First Past the Post. Then bailed spectacularly on that promise. Reckon he regrets bailing yet?

In a recent interview with @Justin_Ling, @JustinTrudeau once again repeats his "no consensus" claim for why he broke his electoral reform promise. The reality is 88% of the experts the ERRE heard and 87% the public who testified were for PR. Sounds like consensus to us!

FPTP has been called “the world’s worst voting system for achieving gender balance” in politics (Kuper, 1990). Every single country with more than 40% female MPs in its primary legislature uses a proportional voting system.

In election law academia, there's a joke that professors shouldn't mention PR too soon because it solves all the problems addressed by the course. Gerrymandered legislatures? Lack of minority representation? Lack of competition? Legislative polarization? PR helps fix them all.
