Lex Fridman repeats one of John F. Kennedy’s most important/relevant quotes: “The very word secrecy is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings.” This is relevant to Americans on the far left to Americans on the far right. In a world that is innovating at exponential levels, it is critical that we hold our government accountable to being as transparent as possible. It’s sad that one of the few things our government seems bipartisan about currently is making sure the public knows only as much information as they let out, allowing them to work in the shadows. Many politicians or people in power will say “the truth at times is to dangerous to allow the public to know”, but this is no different than the issue with censorship. When you decide you know what’s best for someone else, it’s immediately giving you a power that no human should hold and someone will take advantage of it. Transparency is key to a functioning Democracy!
@EndTribalism A lack of transparency drives speculation and also breeds distrust. We've seen that the last several years.
@EndTribalism Truth isn’t attained by politely asking for transparency. The biggest revelations come when info is forcefully wrested away from institutions
@EndTribalism The problem is that we are so polarized at this point, we no longer have to share truths or even in realities. Thanks to our technologies & vast access to information & misinformation, we will consciously or unconsciously select the truths that support our respective tribes.
@EndTribalism When the government doesn't want you to know what it's up to, it just classifies the operation as Top Secret. Top Secret is oftentimes to avoid embarrassment rather than maintaining national security.
@EndTribalism Sure in some case privacy is more important than the transparency . Like secret weapon document from your government is a secret and can not be published right ? Or what ?
@EndTribalism Trust needs to be rebuilt and it cannot grow without transparency.
@EndTribalism I think we need to be invoking Kennedy's name a helluva lot more in the coming days.
