Court sentences terrorists in Nigeria Two developments this week highlight Nigeria’s evolving counterterrorism efforts. The first one is that a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Zakaria Garba to death by hanging for his role in the 2014 Nyanya Motor Park bombing that killed at least 70 people and injured many others. In a separate case, the mother and sister of notorious bandit leader Kachalla Ibrahim Battujo were each sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges linked to supporting his terrorist activities. How is it that when terrorists are being hunted, nobody knows where they are, but when it’s time to negotiate a so-called peace deal with them, suddenly everyone knows where to find them?

Seventeen years ago, I faced threats for criticizing my state governor after he appeared alongside a terrorist openly carrying an AK-47 and issuing threats in the name of a so called amnesty program in Katsina State. At the time, many people defended the arrangement and dismissed concerns raised by journalists and civil society actors. I argued that armed groups could not simply be trusted because they signed peace agreements that will not replaced their evil ways of getting money. A few months later, the then Secretary to the State Government (SSG) publicly acknowledged what many of us had warned about bandits were not trustworthy partners. The peace deal eventually collapsed, and violence continued. Looking back, the threats I received for speaking out only reinforced the importance of questioning policies that prioritize short-term political optics over long-term security. I documented some of these concerns in an article I wrote on the peace deal at the time.

We used to have sheikhs and elders in the north before. Now, we are just left with hungry people and the ones that don’t practice what they preach.

A retired Major General was abducted, died in captivity, his body was reportedly handed over by heavily armed bandits, and they reportedly walked away unchallenged. Meanwhile, officials want Nigerians to believe everything is under control. What does it say about a country when criminals can kidnap a General, keep him for months, return his corpse, and leave without resistance? This is not just a tragedy, it is a national humiliation. The most painful part is that his wife is reportedly still in captivity. If a former Defence spokesman could not be protected, what hope is left for ordinary citizens in villages facing bandits every day? Nigeria is becoming a place where terrorists fear the state less than citizens fear terrorists.

Today, Katsina buried a retired General who was abducted by bandits and died in captivity. Yet, some officials want the public to believe it was merely a “natural death.” What is natural about being kidnapped by terrorists? What is natural about spending days or weeks in captivity under the control of armed criminals? If General Rabe Abubakar had not been abducted, would he have died under those circumstances? This narrative is not only disappointing, it is deeply insulting to every family that has lost a loved one to banditry across Katsina State. It diminishes the pain of victims, ignores the reality of insecurity, and sends a dangerous message that the consequences of terrorism can simply be explained away. The issue is not just how General Rabe died. The issue is that a respected military officer was taken by bandits in the first place and never returned alive. That is the tragedy. That is the failure. That is what should concern every citizen. Katsina deserves honesty, accountability, and a government that stands firmly with victims of terrorism. Calling this a “natural death” only adds salt to an already painful wound. May Allah grant General Rabe Abubakar eternal rest and comfort his family in this difficult time.

The North is gradually becoming a graveyard, with more people dying silently at the hands of terrorists. While victims continue to suffer, the Katsina State Government is busy building houses for repentant bandits, and hundreds of former insurgents have been reintegrated into communities in Borno. What message are we sending to the victims and their families? Bandits killed him, yet the Katsina State Government is describing it as a natural death. Can someone in captivity really have a “natural death”? This explanation raises serious doubts and questions about the government’s position in this case.

In this situation, the Katsina State Government is reportedly planning to purchase houses for so-called repentant bandits and provide startup funds, while victims are left on the streets with no support, hope, or clear future.

Retired Major General Rabe Musa has died in captivity after being abducted by bandits in Katsina State. His death marks another tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity facing communities across northern Nigeria.

Wallahi azeem Nigeria isn’t in a good state and God will punish everyone who has a hand in our current situations. Nigerians needs to stop pretending like there’s nothing bad happening in the country. We must hold these our crook leaders accountable for all the mess in the country or else our next generation will suffer more.

Real and true citizens like VDM and the likes are out there protesting about banditry and kidnapping that’s ravaging the north the most. Our people? Salim Goje and his marriage is the topic of concern.
