Nice to see a Scottish sampler - wonder how many earlier ones there are??

13 April 1599, Esther Inglis finishes a MS of Proverbes for the Earl of Essex; 14 April 1599, she finishes Ecclesiastes for Anthony Bacon. Her husband will deliver them in London to these men for whom he works as intelligencer. @RareBooksOfBod @BLMedieval
Wow - thanks for the detailed photos. Wish I could see the exhibition, but having these kinds of closeups for the amazing embroidery and jewels is wonderful.

OTD, 2 April 1599, Esther Inglis finished dedicating a copy of Les CL Pseaumes de David to Prince Maurice of Nassau, Protestant leader in the Netherlands. Esther embroidered the binding. See the excellent article by Anneke Bakker in Quaerendo, 2018. @FolgerLibrary #Psalms

1 Avril 1601 Esther Inglis finishes her dedication of Les Proverbes du Roi Salomon for Henri, duc de Rohan, which her husband will deliver in France. This is one of her stunning black-and-white manuscripts. See it at: gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv… @laBnF @EstherInglis24
Esther Inglis sometimes suggests to her recipients that they keep her little manuscript in a hidden, or small, or secret, corner of their cabinet.

A wonderful tribute to the memory of Laetitia Yeandle, 1930-2024. I only met her in person once, but got to know her the way you do when you work closely with collections someone else shaped and cared for over many years. She was an incredible person. folger.edu/blogs/collatio…

For the traveller who didn't want to use the ferries, it could be crossed at Stirling Bridge. At the time a cross stood in the middle of the bridge, apparently with an inscription stating that it separated 'the English' & 'people of Brutus' (left) from the 'remote Scots' (right)
One of the things that impresses me about this embroidery is how it creates a sense of depth. Lucretia, in the midst of her violent act, really looks as if she's in a recess. The use of mica flakes as window panes is common, but using it as floor tiles is much more unusual
In this detail from a 1630s-40s embroidery we see Lucretia, an ancient Roman noblewoman who stabs herself. Depictions of Lucretia were common in the early modern world. Silk and metal threads are joined by mica sheets used as window panes and in floor tiles

@OldEdinClub @oculusaye Edinburgh City Archives has the building account for the Parliament House, which mentions plastering the walls, gilding the ceiling knops, and a "footgang" in the floor of hall which may be relevant to the raised seating
If you only ever visit the Early Modern Female Book Ownership website once, now is the time. Read the eight posts we now have on Katherine Blount’s amazing collections. The evolution of scholarly debate since the first post in 2020 is why the website is so brilliant #HerBook
Today on the blog: an existing discovery by Michele Pflug of another book owned by Katherine Blount. Our picture of her library is becoming more complex. This time a book on insects: buff.ly/4auMcWi #HerBook @wolfrestonward @TaraLLyons @WhiteMicheline @memps2
