We've always had SEL in schools. It was called recess, unstructured play, Music, Arts, Physical Education, Etc. But they've been removed or reduced to spend more time on testing, & then we wonder why students lack social/emotional skills to self regulate, focus, & reduce stress.
@DrBradJohnson YES! Several yrs I was required to teach a DAILY 40 minute Intervention class to 3rd graders on Multiplication. Doing this extra class decreased my daily Physical Education classes to 30 minutes a day. Our students got PE 2 days a week = 60 mins but Int got 200 mins of my week?
@DrBradJohnson Yes! And no scripted program can replace unstructured play and the social skills learned from each other. That’s a non-negotiable for my class. We play everyday.
@DrBradJohnson And then districts pour money into programs to teach social, cooperation & self-regulation skills.
@DrBradJohnson School based OT here. I couldn’t agree more!!
@DrBradJohnson Don’t forget the cutting of libraries and librarians in the name of space and money.
@DrBradJohnson Initiative after initiative…UGH. You are correct, Dr. J…thank you for your common sense in these times.
