Some light reading on police comms. Would love to hear from current/ex serving officers on the intro of press officers and more recently social media. Can of course be completely anonymous.
Does mentioning the brand of camera system make you think twice if carrying out disorder is in the mindset? For those where trouble isn’t on the agenda does this reassure you? Is this preemptive policing based on reputation, what’s in front of them or a poor generalisation?

@DissertationUni My theory is that this is one operational area where experience/seniority isn't helpful - and is actually counter-productive. It often seems that chief supers, ACCs and even CCs still think football fans haven't changed since they were on the front-line.
@DissertationUni It most certainly can ... Often around derby matches. The traditional pre-match statement "We will not tolerate trouble causing, drinking, loud behaviour. You will be punished etc etc" has been in vogue among senior officers for years, and can do nothing but set the wrong tone.
@DissertationUni I realise the core focus is social media, but ... issues around policing and reputation (at least for football fans) will always be built around how forces treat fans on the day, and how they think of fans before/after games. Use of kettling, for instance.
It’s reasonable to ask why this should matter to fans. The answer is simple. Because it’s extremely likely any increased policing costs are likely to be passed on to us via increased ticket prices.
It’s important to note that a football match is a private event for the club to run. Why should the police be effectively employed to manage a private event? As a v snr officer once said to me, “we don’t stand in nightclubs all night, so why should we be in stadiums”.
The Star article quotes the Football Policing Lead as saying there has been a 45% increase in disorder in stadiums. My understanding is that there has been a rise in “incidents” including disorder. But note reported and not necessarily investigated and verified incidents.

The last 3 home games vs Millwall, Leeds and Sheffield United all games with recent history of disorder, police resources reduced on all 3 games, just 2 arrests (both away fans) over the 3 games, no disorder, and no home arrests or ejections

1. This is a letter that @gmpolice sent to supporters and others who worked alongside them and @MerseyPolice ahead of the recent fixture between Man United and Liverpool. The tone and content captures both the collaborative approach & their respect for supporters.
An update for yesterday for those interested in the matchday operation. 0 ejections from both Home and away fans. 0 arrests. Just short of 600 Millwall fans turned up. Crowd of around 9000 policed by 4 cops. 2 Met 2 GMP 👍
