One seemingly small UX improvement introduced by the PoX-5 upgrade is that reward distributions now use sBTC. Earlier, a ton of small UTXOs would end up in the bitcoin wallets of stakers (or their pools). Consolidating these UTXOs was not only painful from a UX perspective but would also result in needless gas fees. At low fee rates, like the current 1-5 sats, it’s less of an issue, but we’ve also seen bitcoin fees in the 100-150 sats range in 2024. Once bitcoin gets a quantum upgrade, the effective bandwidth can drop by 50-97% depending on the exact signatures used. Needless to say, this UTXO consolidation issue was not sustainable in the long term, say, post-quantum. Stacks devs already shipped a solution where BTC rewards now accrue in a smart contract on L2, and payments can be automatically made every week to stakers and bondholders. People receive a clean UTXO every week if auto-bridging out to L1, or can simply use sBTC in their wallet. Cheap, clean, and great UX. Small details like that matter when building an institutional-grade product. Forward!
