Should anyone have doubt about Democrats in the South regarding their record on civil rights...read on (this from Grok): "[Governor Ernest] Hollings appointed a centennial commission in 1959 that included [Sen.] May and United Daughters of the Confederacy members. He later described the [Confederate] flag’s placement as a centennial gesture, not a racial statement, though many historians note the timing coincided with massive resistance to desegregation." It was not until 2015 that "Hollings joined other former governors in calling for the flag’s removal from State House grounds." In other words, it took this Democrat, Hollings, 56 years before he felt winds of change should be heeded. He was the Governor of S. Carolina from 1959 to 1963. The likes of him were what Republicans had to fight.
