We need to eliminate sovereign immunity when it comes to illegal immigration. If the gov’t, by way of opening the Southern border, allows illegal aliens into the country — who then commit crimes or murder Americans — those USA families should be able to sue the gov’t.

It's about damn time, but way too late. South Carolina finally wants restaurants to slap up a sign admitting they’re serving foreign pond-raised shrimp instead of actual Lowcountry wild-caught shrimp? After years of letting the shrimping industry get gutted? For decades, cheap imported shrimp (mostly from Vietnam, India, Indonesia, and Ecuador) flooded the market while our shrimpers got crushed by fuel costs, regulations, and unfair competition. Local wild-caught shrimp is premium product, sustainably harvested in U.S. waters with strict rules, no routine antibiotics, better flavor and texture. The foreign stuff is often farm-raised in questionable conditions, with documented issues around antibiotics, hormones, and lax oversight. Yet restaurants in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and across the Lowcountry kept advertising “fresh local shrimp” while serving the cheap imports because it padded their margins. Shrimpgate exposed the rot, testing showed something like 90% of sampled restaurants were pulling this bait-and-switch. The shrimpers sued, some settled, the lawsuit got tossed on technicalities, but the damage was already done. Boats sat idle, licenses dropped sharply, families lost livelihoods, and a proud coastal heritage took another hit. All while Columbia politicians dragged their feet on real country-of-origin enforcement or stronger protections. This bill is a weak little disclosure sign (“Some items may contain foreign imported shrimp… ask for more information”). It’s not a ban, not real tariffs that bite, not aggressive enforcement. It’s damage control after the horse has already left the barn. Consumers who actually care will now have to interrogate their server, while most won’t bother and the deception continues in spirit. South Carolina didn’t do this sooner because too many people in power prioritized cheap foreign product and restaurant profits over protecting American fishermen and coastal communities. They let the industry bleed out for years. This sign requirement is a sad little bandage on a self-inflicted wound. South Carolina legislators and Governor Henry McMaster are a total failure.
