Because Mercury's orbit is tilted and it whips around the Sun every 88 days, these alignments are uncommon—only about 13 or 14 times per century. When one happens, the planet appears as a sharp, jet-black silhouette gliding slowly across the blinding brilliance of the Sun over the course of several hours, a breathtaking reminder of the clockwork precision of our solar system.The most recent transit visible from Earth took place on November 11, 2019. At its nearest, Mercury is still roughly 77 million kilometers away—yet against the Sun’s colossal 1.39-million-kilometer diameter, it shrinks to a mere pixel. The story behind how Stevie Nicks wrote the track is just as legendary as its chart success. During the grueling, emotionally fractured recording sessions for the album at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California, Stevie was feeling completely overwhelmed by the constant tension in the main studio. Looking for an escape, she sneaked off into a hidden, dimly lit back room that belonged to Sly Stone. It was a moody, velvet-draped space featuring a massive pit bed. Sitting alone on that bed with a small Fender Rhodes keyboard and a basic cassette recorder, Stevie tapped into a hypnotic, two-chord bass line. She let all her feelings about her painful breakup with Lindsey Buckingham pour out, locking down the entire melody and lyrics in about ten minutes flat. When she brought the rough tape back to the main studio, the rest of the band wasn't initially impressed because the demo sounded so bare and simplistic. However, Christine McVie recognized the brilliant songwriting underneath, and Lindsey Buckingham immediately went to work crafting that iconic, driving guitar part and the lush vocal harmonies. They took a raw, minimalist poem and built it into a flawless, timeless masterpiece.
