NFL Week 15 Observations - Drake Maye’s Patriots were up 21-0 and went into halftime up 24-7, looking like they might roll Josh Allen’s Bills. - Buffalo then scored touchdowns on their first four drives of the second half. Maye did not play well during Buffalo’s comeback, finishing with just 155 passing yards on the day despite his team scoring 31 points. - Maye did impress as a runner and on a downfield block, on an abnormal reverse field run that TreVeyon Henderson took for a 65-yard touchdown, accounting for New England’s only offense in the second half. Very few quarterbacks in the league could have gotten that far downfield to block for a guy with Henderson’s foot speed. - Speaking of Henderson, he had two 50+ yard runs and continues to look like the only truly dynamic skill player this team has. For me, Henderson has been the most impressive rookie this season, but most of his production has come in the second half of the year. - Maye is a good player with a bright future, that’s been beating up mediocre or worse teams all year. This game playing out this way might actually be good for his development and Mike Vrabel’s Patriots as a whole in the long run. Better to suffer a collapse to a contender now than in January, and this could end up giving this young team that’s been rolling for months some valuable perspective. - Josh Allen did Josh Allen things, plain and simple. He and Maye both elevate their teams, where their speedy running backs provide most of the real help either quarterback gets from their skill group. - You have to give the Bills’ defense credit too, they were in a very bad spot entering halftime and basically pitched a shutout outside of Henderson’s reverse field run. - Lastly, how was Patriots vs Bills not flexed into Sunday Night Football over Cowboys vs. Vikings? Is there any football fan in America that didn’t want to see Allen vs. Maye? - I mentioned Saturday that I expected Bengals and Ravens to be a low scoring type of game given the weather and a variety of factors, to the point one guy in the comments was calling me an idiot for this stance. I was expecting a Ravens win, but definitely not a shutout. - That shutout happened, in part, because of a Joe Burrow interception in the red zone that was returned the other way for a score (after it was handed by the intercepting player to a faster defensive back). - Good teams beat the daylights out of below average teams, and that’s what the Bears did to the Browns today. If not for a few Chicago drops, this 31-3 score could have actually been worse. - I have been given a lot of shit about my stance on Caleb Williams all year. I talk about him as often as I have because he’s interesting and unique. That wild cross field throw he made to DJ Moore, isn’t a surprise for Williams, and guys who make high difficulty plays like this on a regular basis, that can evade pressure the way he does, aren’t very common. - - Williams has also thrown the fewest interceptions through his first 1,000 attempts in league history. A good chunk of his incompletions this season have been throw aways, usually when there is nothing there. - Ben Johnson creates margin every week, and Caleb can make otherworldly plays on a regular basis, and that combination is exactly why I talk about the Bears as much as I do. If you’re into football, Chicago has been the most interesting team in the league all year because where all of this can go long term, let’s just say I hope it happens. - I could see Luther Burden leading the Bears in receiving yards next year, he’s a separator and a yac player, those are things Ben Johnson wants and schemes for. - Dennis Allen has been one of the better coordinators this season, in terms of getting the most out of a group. He had another very good game here. - Gervon Dexter really impressed me last year, and it was good to see a bit of a surge out of him today. - Shedeur Sanders made a few nice plays but ultimately did not play very well in a game where Cleveland was upside down on the scoreboard early. - I cannot recall a better late afternoon slate as this one had three very high interest games. - Seahawks vs. Colts went kind of how I expected, as I thought Indianapolis was going to step up on defense, putting Philip Rivers in a situation where he’d just have to manage a game. - He had a couple pressure management plays where he looked like a guy in his mid 40s trying to play in the NFL after taking a few years off, but he played pretty well considering the situation and the opponent. His interception came with 14 seconds left in the game after Seattle just took the lead. Ultimately, Rivers did pretty much what I was expecting, which I’d view as an achievement given the situation. - Internally, I treat Seattle more like a 9-5 team than an 11-3 one. If you expect Seattle to make a deep playoff run, this outing would have given me real concern. - Denver was down 23-14 in this contest and ultimately won 34-26. - Bo Nix played a very good game where he made a number of tough throws for chunk plays, definitely impressive. Denver’s offensive line was also fantastic in pass protection. - I also thought the Packers’ defense played much better the previous week against Chicago, even before Micah Parsons went down in the third quarter. Green Bay’s front in particular looked faster against the Bears and overall, I thought they had a bit of a spike game last week. The Packers’ defense looked more like it did against the Giants in Denver today. - On the other side of the ball for the Packers the big difference between this week and last week is Denver generated pressure throughout this contest, which led to an uneven game from Jordan Love. - Regardless, Denver has won a lot of games by the skin of their teeth this season, but this was a genuinely impressive win. - I’m not sure why Rams vs. Lions wasn’t a primetime game, that one would have been a no brainer before the season started. - Detroit’s offense showed up, as Jared Goff had a very strong game while the Lions’ offensive line did a good job managing the Rams’ talented front. - The Rams gave up over 100 yards to both Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, but shut down Lions running backs. - Matthew Stafford’s interception came on a great play from Aidan Hutchinson, which led to an early short field score for the Lions. Otherwise, Stafford tore up Detroit, where the Rams took command of this game behind their 17-0 third quarter. - Once again, similar, highly productive rushing outputs from both Kyren Williams and Blake Corum. - The Panthers pass defense was genuinely bad late in this game, where they basically handed this win to the Saints. Given the stakes for Carolina, calling this an underwhelming performance would be putting it kindly. - Tyler Shough has had two solid games in a row, against two atrocious defensive efforts. So, I’d still put him in the category of “fine”, but he doesn’t do much for me, I’d put most of New Orleans mild offensive success over the past two weeks on the defenses they played. - The Eagles beat the Raiders 31-0, which wasn’t really a surprise. - The Eagles did their job on offense against one of the most talent poor teams in the league, which is a positive for this group with the way they’ve played. - The Raiders didn’t accumulate 100 yards of offense, and no team in the league is in a worse position than they are, as they are a team that needs a new quarterback, new coach, new offensive line where their two best offensive players are a tight end and running back. Their best overall player, Maxx Crosby, is the only piece they could move to acquire more premium draft picks. Just a disaster, in a division with three contenders. - Patrick Mahomes is injured, which is bad for the sport as a whole, but if we’re being honest with ourselves, the Chiefs have had offensive line injuries the past two weeks and Mahomes hasn’t been very good during that span. Justin Herbert has played behind an injury ravaged offensive line for weeks himself, and he’s been up and down in that environment as well. Point being here, these are two great players that aren’t exactly lighting it up behind bad offensive line play. - CJ Stroud and the Texans offense did exactly what I wanted to see out of them in this spot: shred a bad team. If Houston’s offense can consistently play at a league average level down the stretch, they have a very real shot to get through the AFC. - Trevor Lawrence had a really good game against a bad opponent, but two pieces of context. First, running backs caught four of Lawrence’s five touchdown passes (one of them was a big one from Travis Etienne). The second is its driven me crazy for years that Lawerence doesn’t run more, because he was a very good runner at Clemson. He had 5 carries for 51 yards against the Jets, which is a trend I hope continues. - If there is one silver lining here for the Jets, Adonai Mitchell has already had a few good games since being acquired from the Colts in the Sauce trade. - The 49ers did what I expected, very efficient game through the air against a bottom tier team. Most of the Titans offense came in a negative game script. - Cam Ward made a really nice throw while extending a play that was dropped. All year Ward has had moments where he’s flashed some pretty high-end talent, but this offense has had zero consistency all year. Reminds me a lot of Trevor Lawrence’s first year. - Giants rookie edge Abdul Carter has been surging for weeks and he added another sack against Washington. - The Commanders took the lead on the game’s first drive and never looked back, despite Jayden Daniels being sidelined. I could see this outcome being the absolute point of no return for GM Joe Schoen. - The last two games of the season against the Raiders and Cowboys are important for Jaxson Dart, because Jameis Winston played better against the Packers and Lions than Dart has played against New England and Washington since returning from injury. Media tried to frame Dart as a superstar after the Giants beat the Eagles in Dart’s third start, I’ll continue to say I’m much closer to “he’s encouraging” than “he’s a superstar” when it comes to Dart. - Pretty good showing out of JJ McCarthy, where I think it’s safe to call tonight his best game as a pro to date. The waggle type throw he made early in the game to Nailor was not an easy throw. McCarthy made a few good-looking throws on the move, and overall looked like a first round pick tonight. - Justin Jefferson could have had two touchdowns tonight. The first was negated by a penalty, the second was dropped. A few other Jefferson targets were offline. - On a 4th and 7 play with 5ish minutes left, the Vikings right edge (Greenard) got an amazing jump on that snap, which derailed the play for Dak Prescott, who still got off an accurate pass. The pass ended up being short, but that was an excellent overall football play. I will try to do this every Saturday night of the NFL season, but to be clear I am doing this for the purpose of growing my following.
