2/2 acknowledge what it appears or you know they are feeling, state three “because” statements, then be quiet and let your validating statements sit. They will fill the silence with their own feelings. If they don’t, ask if they need support.
One of the most important things a parent can do is to transition from blaming & shaming your child with ED, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Instead, validate. It is a powerful way to connect with your kid differently and open doors that before were locked shut. 1/2

@aedweb @EDHopeGlobal Education and support group interactions are essential to recharging your battery. Learning to communicate with your child using empathy also keeps a forward momentum. I found that when I felt like giving up was when I needed to recharge my own battery and connect authentically.
It's hard to understand #eatingdisorders. Here is a great visual to clarify that weight is not an eating disorder.
The way I see it, the diagnosis of Anorexia b/p type as well as the diagnosis of Atypical AN reflect the weight bias of the DSM. Instead, we could look at it this way - that all 4 major eating disorders occur across all weight ranges and also affect people of all genders.
Empathy is one of the surest ways we can support and strengthen our relationships with those we love. Empathy is especially necessary for those on a journey of recovery.

When things are hard and emotions begin to take over for your loved one, sometimes the best thing to do is say “I don’t know what we are going to do, but we are going to figure it out together.” There is strength in companionship and love.

For those of us with daughters with this variant of anorexia, this is important information to know. Exercise in the presence of restricted eating is a dangerous combination.
